Intern, Reference Department - West Hartford Public Library

Intern, Reference Department - West Hartford Public Library. The West Hartford Library is looking for a current MLS candidate for its internship program. The program has been designed to provide practical, on-the-job experience to individuals pursuing a career in reference service. Applicants must have completed at least four graduate level library science courses before the start date of their internship including a reference services course. The successful applicant will be paid a stipend of $4375 for 250 hours of work over approximately 5 months starting in January. The intern will have the opportunity to shadow librarians at a fast-paced reference desk and to help to implement a special technology, video, and marketing project (with a focus on video production). In addition, the intern will help with other departmental projects such as website management, social media, library programs, subject bibliographies, and other projects as assigned. Although the intern will work primarily in the Adult Division of the Noah Webster Library located at 20 South Main Street, s/he will do a rotation in each of the library’s two branches as well as other library divisions to gain a broader understanding of public library operations. In order to be eligible for this position, students must: (a) be enrolled in a Master of Library Science Program, (b) Must have completed at least four courses including a reference services course before the start date of the internship, (c) Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and must not currently be employed by the West Hartford Library, (d) Have reliable transportation. The schedule for this position is flexible, but may include some weekday, evening, and weekend hours. History Room/Archives Internship - Avon Free Public Library

History Room/Archives Internship - Avon Free Public Library. The reference department of the Avon Free Public Library is currently accepting applications from MLS candidates and History MA candidates for its 2017 History Room/ Archives internship.
     The Avon Library preserves the history of Avon, Connecticut, through its collections in the Marion Hunter History Room. This collection, comprised of photos, primary documents, and books, is a complement to the Avon Historical Society’s collection of objects and artifacts.
     The Avon Library’s history collection completed a “Report of Preservation Needs” in February 2016; this assessment was funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. In September 2016, a Connecticut Traveling Archivist visited to provide further guidance and instruction for care and handling of the collection. The reference and technology librarians at the Avon Library have been actively (and properly!) repackaging and storing the items within the Marion Hunter History Room, and scanning items (digitizing) to the Connecticut Digital Archive (CTDA).
     This internship is designed to provide practical, in-the-archives experience for those pursuing archive and history studies. Applicants must have completed at least four graduate level library science/MA history program courses before the start date of their internship. The successful applicant will be paid a stipend of $2,500 for approximately 125 hours of work over approximately 2-3 months. The intern will select an area of the archive room to organize, digitize, and create a final project/publish on. A schedule of the project, once selected, will be created, with measurable outcomes for the student and the library.
     This internship is funded through the generous support of the Friends of the Avon Library.
     Eligibility and requirements: Enrollment in a Master of Library Science Program or enrollment in History MA program. Applicants must have completed at least four graduate level courses. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. The stipend for this internship will be paid in two lump sums. Schedule will be designed once the candidate is selected, and will include flexibility. Strong computer skills, including internet research, webpage familiarity, etc are required. Candidate must have reliable transportation.

Reference Internship - Westport Library

Reference Internship Opportunity - The Westport Library (CT) is excited to offer a new internship to MLS candidates. The Internship Program has been designed to offer practical, on the job, resume enhancing experiences to MLS candidates pursuing a career in reference services. Over the course of the internship, the selected intern will have the opportunity to shadow librarians at a dynamic public library reference desk as well as assist them with off-desk assignments. In partnership with a mentor librarian, the intern will have the opportunity to design and teach a technology class and create a resource guide on a subject needed by the community. The intern will also have an opportunity to work with the MakerSpace team, and Programming Department on special projects. Eligibility and requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in a Master of Library Science Program and have completed at least four graduate level library science courses, including a reference course. Technology Assistant Intern - Part Time. Guilford Smith Memorial Library in South Windham is looking for an enthusiastic and savvy individual to provide technological assistance to our patrons. We are looking for an individual who is seeking experience or eager to start a career in public service. The ideal candidate will be comfortable using both PCs and Macs, be proficient in Microsoft Office, have great listening skills, and be comfortable working with a group of people, or working one-on-one. Applicants should have experience with a variety of software and programs and customer service skills. The Technology Assistant will work with the director to plan weekly technology lessons on a given subject, and be available at scheduled times to answer specific patron questions. Summer Library Intern

Mystic & Noank Library The Mystic & Noank Library is seeking a recent tech-savvy MLS graduate or MLS student with excellent customer service skills to work 19 hours a week  for eleven weeks (preferably starting the week of June 6).  Basic weekly schedule will be:  Mondays & Tuesdays, 10 to 1, Wednesdays, 1 to 9, and Thursdays, 10 to 5. Interest in Children’s Programming is required. After two weeks of training, the Intern will be expected to lead a weekly preschool storytime and assist our Head of Youth Services in managing the Summer Reading Program and a variety of Children’s and Teen Programs. Intern will also be asked to assist at the Circulation Desk and to provide Readers Advisory and Reference Services, as needed, to patrons of all ages. Interest in assisting in the launch of a Minecraft program for Tweens is preferred. Intern will be assigned other special projects throughout the summer. Position pays $15 per hour. Avon Free Public LibraryThe Avon Free Public Library welcomes applications from MLS candidates for its newly created internship program.  The program has been designed to provide practical, on-the- job experience to individuals pursuing a career in reference service. Applicants must have completed at least four graduate level library science courses before the start date of their internship including a reference services course.  The successful applicant will be paid a stipend of $4,000 for approximately 210 hours of work over approximately 3-4 months. The intern will have the opportunity to shadow librarians at a modern public library reference desk as well as assist them with off-desk assignments such as collection and website development, digitization projects, subject bibliographies, readers advisory aids, indexing, programming, and other projects as assigned. This internship program is funded through the generous support of the Friends of the Avon Library. Eligibility and requirements: Enrollment in a Master of Library Science Program. Applicants must have completed at least four courses including a reference services course before the start date of the internship. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.. Information Literacy Program Internship, Fall 2015 DiMenna-Nyselius Library, Fairfield University




Description of Program



In concert with the mission of Fairfield University, the DiMenna-Nyselius Library Instruction Program seeks to develop information-literate lifelong learners. We define information literacy as the ability to recognize when information is needed; to effectively locate and organize information while considering the myriad of information sources and formats available; to logically and critically evaluate and assimilate information while seeking objective truth and personal meaning; to synthesize and use information to communicate conclusions persuasively; and to apply these skills ethically and legally throughout life, with a sense of social responsibility.







Qualifications



Interns must be currently enrolled in a graduate level Library and Information Science or School Media program. Relevant class work in reference or instruction preferred.







Description of Internship



The Intern will play an active role in our Information Literacy Program. The Intern will:







Work closely with the Instruction Coordinator to design and deliver approximately 8-10 library instruction classes. The exact number and types of classes will be determined through careful review of the Intern’s experience and interests, as well as our program’s needs.




Have the opportunity to observe seasoned instruction librarians, and receive substantive feedback on content and delivery of instruction.




Work collaboratively with faculty on lesson plans.




Depending on experience, career interests, and need, the Intern could also produce a project related to our instruction program. The Intern would work closely with the Instruction Coordinator on such a project.




Meet regularly with the Instruction Coordinator for ongoing feedback and discussion.

Depending on experience, previous coursework, and interest, readings and discussions of information literacy related readings may be included.



This internship is an excellent opportunity to work in an academic environment, learn about the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education in theory and in practice, and gain valuable instruction experience.







This internship begins in late August and runs through December, 2015.

Teen Services Internship - Fairfield Woods Library

Teen Services Internship - Fairfield Woods Library, Fairfield, CT. Fairfield Woods Library seeks a creative, self-motivated library student to work during after-school hours in the downUNDER, a unique space dedicated to our teen population. Next door to a middle school, the downUNDER is a Teen Center that serves up to 30 young people per day. Working closely with professional librarians, this Internship will provide the right candidate with an excellent opportunity to work in a highly-trafficked teen-centered environment, and the opportunity to learn about the operations of our popular and innovative teen department. Fairfield Woods Library is the busiest branch library in Connecticut and has an active neighborhood patronage. The ideal candidate for this internship would be a current library science student with an active interest in teen librarianship, including young adult literature, trends and programming. This intern must be able to connect well with teens, be comfortable with social media, be familiar with portable devices and have the ability and enthusiasm to develop programs using them. The candidate must take initiative, be flexible and be able to work creatively and independently. Electronic Resources Intern - UConn School of Law Library, Hartford

Electronic Resources Intern - UConn School of Law Library in Hartford has an opportunity for an energetic library student interested in gaining electronic resource management experience in an academic setting. Position Description: The Law Library’s electronic collection has grown tremendously in the past five years. The library is also continuing to transition from print to electronic-only format. With the growth in electronic content, the library has recently implemented an electronic resource management (ERM) system along with a knowledgebase and open URL link resolver. The intern will work closely with the Electronic Resources librarian as well as other members of the technical services team. The intern will assist with significant electronic resource management projects and gain a comprehensive understanding of electronic resource management. Opportunities may include: assisting with the troubleshooting of electronic access issues; identifying key information from the review of signed licenses; managing metadata for electronic materials; bulk record editing and loading; providing support and assisting with the guidance of acquisitions staff as they shift to e-only; assist with the implementation of emerging technologies. Qualifications: The successful candidate will be currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science. The candidate should possess a strong desire to learn more about electronic resource management and emerging technologies. Drupal experience desired but not required. Familiarity with Innovative Interfaces and Serials Solutions products desired but not required. The intern should be present in the library at least two days a week. The Intern will: Work closely with the Instruction Coordinator to design and deliver approximately 8-10 library instruction classes. The exact number and types of classes will be determined through careful review of the Intern’s experience and interests, as well as our Program’s needs. Have the opportunity to observe seasoned instruction librarians, and receive substantive feedback on content and delivery of instruction, work collaboratively with faculty on lesson plans, depending on experience, career interests, and need. The Intern could also produce a project related to our instruction program. The Intern would work closely with the Instruction Coordinator on such a project, meet regularly with the Instruction Coordinator for ongoing feedback and discussion. Depending on experience, previous coursework, and interest, readings and discussions of information literacy related readings may be included. This internship is an excellent opportunity to work in an academic environment, learn about Information Literacy Standards in theory and in practice, and gain valuable instruction experience. Intern - Norfolk Library. The Norfolk Library is looking for an undergraduate college student for a 10 hour a week, one year, paid internship. This is a weekend position. The applicant must have had a positive experience with public libraries, with strong computer skills and ability to adapt quickly to new and varied tasks. $8.25 per hour, no benefits.
