Instruction and Outreach Librarian - The Loomis Chaffee School

Instruction and Outreach Librarian - The Katharine Brush Library at The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut is searching for a dynamic, progressive, and patron-focused Instruction and Outreach Librarian. One of three professional librarians, the Instruction and Outreach Librarian will assume the primary responsibility of coordinating the library instruction and information literacy program, including information literacy curriculum development and student assessment. The Instruction and Outreach Librarian will assist with research and information inquiries from the Loomis community with a focus on assisting students in developing research strategies to locate and evaluate information. Public Services Librarian

Allen Library Position Summary: Assumes responsibility for providing formal and informal information literacy instruction to students, faculty and staff.  Supervises circulation, reserves, stack maintenance, and equipment operations in the Allen Library (a music and dance library). Assists library patrons in their research using print, online and audiovisual resources in music and dance. Performs all duties in full support of the University’s mission, understanding that the positive and effective execution of these duties are instrumental to the education of the University’s students. Key Responsibilities: Plans, presents, and evaluates the effectiveness of instructional classes on information resources to students, faculty and staff. Administers the HLM 020 online information literacy course.  Maintains print manuals and online information. Assists students and library patrons in the best use of print, electronic, and audiovisual music, dance and other performing arts resources in a wide array of languages and formats.  Recruits, trains, and evaluates staff who provide reference and information service to library patrons. Provides occasional recommendations for title development of the print and online reference collection. Assists with the design and implementation of public service policies, procedures, outreach, and marketing strategies in consultation or collaboration with the Head of Allen Library and the Mortensen Library’s Head of Reference and Public Services. Assists the Head of the Allen Library in identifying priorities, goals, strategies, and direction of Allen Library. Oversees Allen Library public services, including circulation services, course reserves, stack/collection maintenance, and equipment. Supervises one full-time assistant plus student employees. Monitors the student employee budget in an effort to ensure prudent fiscal management. Updates and maintains the Allen Library web pages in conjunction with the Allen Head and University Libraries Web Applications Developer and Technology Specialist to enhance usability, promote library offerings, and ensure maintenance is in compliance with University branding standards and Libraries policies. Develops, enhances, and/or tests information search tools and online finding aids as necessary and/or appropriate. Participates in development of online library system, including system queries, testing, data specifications, problem reporting and proposal of functionalities pertaining to library catalog, circulation and course reserves. Maintains awareness of trends and advances in the field through attendance at relevant meetings or seminars as well as through regular examination of literature in the field. Participates in relevant professional organizations. Serves on internal and external committees as appropriate. Maintains accurate statistics and develops a variety reports for the Allen Library Head on matters pertaining to the Allen Library, including but not limited to annual and accreditation reports. Performs other related duties as assigned. Formal Education: Master’s Degree of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution required, and  Bachelor’s Degree required with a major in music (or recognized equivalents). Instructional Design Librarian

User Engagement Librarian

Trinity College Information Services seeks a dynamic, creative, collaborative and forward-thinking User Engagement Librarian to join the Research Services team in the library. Reporting to the Director of Research Services and Collections the successful candidate will be an active participant in the work of the team, and will serve as a liaison to faculty in an academic department, build subject-specific collections, provide general and specialized information research assistance; and deliver information literacy instruction. The successful candidate will create a new user engagement program for the library, and in that role will lead efforts to study and define the information needs of students, faculty and staff at Trinity College. The incumbent will bring that knowledge back to staff across IS and help them translate that knowledge into excellent services, collections and spaces that will delight the Trinity community. The User Engagement Librarian will design a two-way communication strategy that will facilitate continuous feedback from Trinity constituents, and help staff to communicate out to the community to promote collections, services and spaces. The successful candidate will be highly collaborative, customer-service oriented, and be adaptable to the needs of a changing information environment. Duties: Regularly teach classes as part of the library’s information literacy program, and provide one-on-one consultations. Serve as a liaison to designated academic departments and/or programs. Use a variety of methods to study user needs, such as interviews, focus groups, surveys, participatory design and usability testing. Inventory those needs and the services offered by the newly merged library and IT organization. Identify gaps in service and other opportunities for improvements. Collaborate with staff to design new services or tailor existing services to user needs. In particular help a newly merged Library IT organization to streamline services in a way that makes sense for users. Design and coordinate an effective communication strategy, and help staff to develop marketing material online and in print. In this capacity manage the library’s social media and web presence. Requirements: MLS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent education and experience (MS,MIS, MFA, or MA).  Knowledge of current and emerging trends in academic librarianship. Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills. Evidence of successful collaboration. Demonstrated ability to effectively use a variety of new technology communication methods. Experience with one or more: surveys, focus groups, usability testing and interviews.   Curiosity about and comfortable with new technologies. Systems Librarian – University of Bridgeport



The Systems Librarian investigates, understands, and improves library systems as part of a team under the direction of the University Librarian and acts as a liaison between the electronic resources/systems and the library. This candidate will work with the other librarians, a paraprofessional system expert and a system administrator in the I.T. Department and will be an advanced administrative user of the Ex Libris suite of products including Primo, Primo Central, Metalib, SFX, EZ Proxy and Voyager or another I.L.S. as well as approximately 85 research databases and a dspace Institutional Repository.

This Systems Librarian will back up the paraprofessional system expert, the I.T. systems administrator and the Digital Content Librarian and will be able to perform the tasks assigned those positions as necessary including maintaining and updating the link resolver and Primo Discovery tool, updating the Primo user interface and the web pages contained therein, mobile device functionality, system upgrades and maintenance, and dspace repository maintenance.  This Librarian will be responsible for teaching information literacy once or twice a year and will work at the reference desk every week of the Fall and Spring Semesters.  This librarian will also serve as a subject liaison to one computer related program on campus with responsibility for some collection development.  

Responsibilities: 
Acts as the Liaison between the individual electronic products and the library customizing features for optimal functionality, communicating system information, providing training, reviewing and then setting options, and improving overall use of the systems
Creates, Schedules, and runs reports
Posts Statistics and log data to shared space online
Customizes Electronic resources & I.L.S.
Links tables in Microsoft Access
Runs and Troubleshoots Access queries as necessary
Runs Large Scale Batch Functions and Exporting or Importing Holdings within Voyager, etc.
Performs Maintenance and Control of data within Voyager, etc.
Training of Systems or Electronic Resources
Communication of Systems Information
Assist with the process of renewing and managing electronic resources, upgrades, maintenance of   systems, etc.
Other duties as assigned

Qualifications required:
Master’s Degree in Library Science or Service
Ability to learn new technologies quickly and independently
SQL
2+ years of experience as an advanced user of an I.L.S. including experience with administrative functions
Understanding of ILS functions like Circulation and interactivity with other systems
Sophisticated Experience and Knowledge of Microsoft Access including the ability to Link Tables and Troubleshoot Queries
Understanding of Open URL, Link Resolvers, and Discovery Systems

Qualifications preferred:
CSS and HTML
Experience setting up library applications such as link resolvers or discovery systems
Web scripting
JAVA and Perl
Windows Server Experience
Experience working with content management systems, learning management systems, or institutional repositories
Knowledge of Web Development Interfaces

Information Literacy Program Internship, Fall 2015 DiMenna-Nyselius Library, Fairfield University




Description of Program



In concert with the mission of Fairfield University, the DiMenna-Nyselius Library Instruction Program seeks to develop information-literate lifelong learners. We define information literacy as the ability to recognize when information is needed; to effectively locate and organize information while considering the myriad of information sources and formats available; to logically and critically evaluate and assimilate information while seeking objective truth and personal meaning; to synthesize and use information to communicate conclusions persuasively; and to apply these skills ethically and legally throughout life, with a sense of social responsibility.







Qualifications



Interns must be currently enrolled in a graduate level Library and Information Science or School Media program. Relevant class work in reference or instruction preferred.







Description of Internship



The Intern will play an active role in our Information Literacy Program. The Intern will:







Work closely with the Instruction Coordinator to design and deliver approximately 8-10 library instruction classes. The exact number and types of classes will be determined through careful review of the Intern’s experience and interests, as well as our program’s needs.




Have the opportunity to observe seasoned instruction librarians, and receive substantive feedback on content and delivery of instruction.




Work collaboratively with faculty on lesson plans.




Depending on experience, career interests, and need, the Intern could also produce a project related to our instruction program. The Intern would work closely with the Instruction Coordinator on such a project.




Meet regularly with the Instruction Coordinator for ongoing feedback and discussion.

Depending on experience, previous coursework, and interest, readings and discussions of information literacy related readings may be included.



This internship is an excellent opportunity to work in an academic environment, learn about the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education in theory and in practice, and gain valuable instruction experience.







This internship begins in late August and runs through December, 2015.

Responsibilities include the main campus library and all branch libraries.Job duties include but are not limited to the following: Responsible for the full range of technical services, including original cataloging; Hires, trains and evaluates staff and student workers; monitors and assesses the department’s productivity and quality of output/work performed; Investigates and evaluates new products to improve workflow and provide better services; Implements procedures and workflow for incorporating serial, books, DVDs and e-resources in the Library’s Catalog utilizing established standards, such as bulk importing of records for e-books; Supervises the U.S. Government Documents depository collection; Manages electronic course reserves; Keeps detailed, accurate statistics of all departmental activities; Collaborates with other librarians in designing library instruction curriculum to enhance lesson plans, design online learning materials, and analyze and present alternative models of information literacy instructions; Provides information literacy instruction and monitors collection development in those areas; keeps abreast with current electronic and print resources in assigned subject areas; Evaluates and selects library materials for areas assigned, as well as other collection development tasks, including weeding; Develops new instruction applications of technology, including design of web-based learning objects and assessment tools; Keeps abreast of best practices in information literacy, including teaching techniques, theory, assessment methods, and new technologies; Serves as subject liaison to one or more academic departments; Provides reference and research services to onsite and distance patrons; Prepares monthly activity reports and other evaluative reports as assigned; Participates in establishing policies/standards/guidelines/procedures for the formulation of the Library’s priorities and the achievement of the Library’s goals; Recommends policy changes to improve services to the University Community; Recommends workflow changes to streamline and improve operations/services; All related duties and projects as assigned by the supervisor. Qualifications: MLS degree from an ALA accredited school required; Familiarity with OCLC is essential with demonstrated ability to utilize the cataloging system to take advantage of all its capabilities; Demonstrated knowledge of library cataloging principles and practices, including AACR2, RDA, LC classification and subject headings etc. is essential; Experience with integrated library systems required; familiarity with the Voyager system preferred; Demonstrated knowledge of making materials in a wide variety of formats (print, microform, online) discoverable by our patrons; Library instruction experience is highly desirable; Supervisory experience required.
