Cataloging Consultant - UKA Teacher U

Cataloging Consultant - UKA Teacher U. Reports to: Director of Technology and Knowledge Management. Location: New York, New York. GENERAL SUMMARY: Teacher U is a revolutionary, practical, results-oriented teacher training program developed by the founders of Uncommon Schools, KIPP, and Achievement First. Over the past three years, Teacher U has managed a master’s level program at Hunter College and recently has created a new, independent graduate program, Relay School of Education, which will begin operations in the summer of 2011. The Cataloging Consultant will complete a temporary, one-time project to perform original and copy cataloging for approximately 700 library items (primarily monographs). This person will also process the materials to be shelf-ready. This project is expected to take 80 hours and will be performed over the course of two weeks. Should the work be completed sooner, the Cataloging Consultant may perform other library projects, time permitting. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Catalogue all library materials in our KOHA integrated library system; perform both original and copy cataloging according to national bibliographic standards; ensure that items are shelf ready with proper labeling, barcodes, and book jackets; and complete other library projects, time permitting, and at the discretion of the Knowledge Management Consultant. QUALIFICATIONS: This is an outstanding opportunity to play an integral role in urban, public education reform. First and foremost, the Cataloging Consultant must share the team’s sense of urgency about the need to improve student achievement through phenomenal teacher training. Librarian / Curator of Manuscripts and Rare Books - The Fairfield Museum and History Center in Fairfield, CT has re-opened its search for a full-time Librarian / Curator to lead the development of its special collections library. The library is integral to the museum’s mission to celebrate and cultivate stories from multiple points of view and to use history to create an accessible public forum. The Fairfield Museum and History Center is a 13,000 square foot museum, library and community education facility located on Fairfield’s historic Town Green. Its library is home to approximately 12,000 volumes, more than 230 distinct manuscript collections, rich collections of 18th and 19th century journals, diaries, rare books, architectural drawings, as well as 3,000 photographs, 300 maps, and ephemera. The library is a prime resource for the history and genealogy of southwestern Connecticut, serving researchers from across the nation as well as internationally. The collection’s card catalogue has recently joined Fairfield Public Library’s online SIRSI catalog. The Librarian / Curator will work closely with museum staff to design and implement community programming and exhibitions that introduce and support students, families and adults in the process of historical research and exploration. Job activities include: developing and implementing strategies for making the library’s primary source materials more accessible and better utilized; providing reference assistance; managing the care, preservation and organization of library collections; identifying areas for collections development and leading outreach efforts to achieve development goals; processing manuscript collections; and developing digital projects that improve access. The librarian will participate in collaborative initiatives with other regional libraries, universities and partner organizations. Job Requirements: Graduate degree in Library or Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association, or advanced degree in Public History, American Studies or similar discipline that includes coursework or experience in developing a broad range of library-based public programs; undergraduate or graduate work in American history; an understanding of genealogical research and resources; experience with manuscript and archival administration; an outgoing personality and ability to reach out and work with users of all ages; and knowledge of MARC-format cataloging and XML-encoding. The incumbent develops and delivers curriculum and teaching materials to support a broad range of instructional activities that includes working to embed information literacy instruction in the curriculum, classroom teaching, and development of assessment measures.
