Head of Youth Services - Kent Public Library, NY

Head of Youth Services - The Kent Public Library in Putnam County, NY is seeking an enthusiastic, creative full-time (35-hours per week) Head of Youth Services to develop and oversee the Library’s children’s and young adult collections and programs. Will lead a team including a program coordinator and a story time specialist, already on staff. Must have a desire to encourage a love of reading and learning in children and teens.
     Specific responsibilities include: Work with the Youth Team to plan, promote, implement, and evaluate programs for children, young adults, and families. Maintain and develop the children’s and young adult collections, selecting, ordering, and processing materials. Work with local schools to introduce young people to the Library
     The candidate must have strong customer service skills and be able to work with people of all ages and temperaments, especially with children and young adults, and enjoy working as part of a team. Must be knowledgeable about current and emerging library technology. Will ordinarily work Mondays through Fridays, working on occasional weekends and evenings when needed for special programs.
     Minimum qualifications: MLS or MLIS, New York State Public Librarian's Professional Certificate, and experience working with children and young adults. Salary between 41,000 and 43,700, depending on education and experience. Benefits include paid vacation and sick leave and health insurance.

Youth Services Librarian - Pearle L. Crawford Memorial Library. The Town of Dudley (Massachusetts) is accepting applications for the position of Youth Services Librarian. Position is full-time, 40 hours per week and includes some evening and rotating Saturday hours. The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for all aspects of services to children, their caregivers, tweens and teens. Must be very comfortable working with patrons from newborn through 18.      Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Plans, organizes, and maintains the library’s children and young adult collections. Provides reader’s advisory service for youth and families. Assists youth in the use of library and its resources. Assists parents/caregivers in selection of appropriate youth material. Coordinates activities and programs with local schools and organizations. Checks materials in and out of the library, renews materials, places books on hold, notifies patrons the arrival of held books and collects overdue fines. Plans, organizes, and publicizes all youth programs including but not limited to story times, crafts, summer reading, special events, reading clubs, school and community outreach. Participates in the formulation of policy and develops procedures related to youth services. Interprets policy and explains policy and procedure to the public. Manages youth services budget. Compiles, reviews, and interprets statistical data regarding use of youth services and prepares regular management reports for review by Director. Trains and supervises youth volunteers. Assists front desk circulation staff when necessary. Acts on behalf of Director in his/her absence. Other related duties as assigned.
     Education, Experience, Skills: Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis on services to youth; Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program preferred. Three or more years of library experience to include supervisory experience, collection development, programming, circulation, reference and reader’s advisory services for youth. Experience working with youth from birth through age 18. Previous experience with Evergreen automated library system preferable. Must be fluent with use of Internet, social media, databases, downloadable e/audiobook services and Microsoft Office productivity software. LOW Outreach Assistant, Part Time - Hartford Public Library. Grant Funded Position LP11/8. Twenty hours per week; must be available weekday mornings. Hartford Public Library is seeking a part time Outreach Assistant. Reporting to the Public Services Director, the Outreach Assistant is responsible for providing direct service to customers on the Library on Wheels (LOW) and other specified sites. The incumbent works under the general direction of the Youth and Family Services Director to deliver a variety of youth outreach story times and programs at designated child care sites.
      PUBLIC SERVICE: Provide direct assistance to customers by circulating materials and providing basic information regarding library programs and services at designated locations. Under the general direction of the youth and family services director schedule and carry out visits to local child care centers on the LOW. This includes preparing and compiling appropriate materials beforehand, conducting story times, book talks, and other programming as requested. Receive training in early literacy development and story time programming as needed. Maintain and cultivate contact with the general community. Other related projects, duties and responsibilities may be assigned as deemed necessary.
      ADMINISTRATIVE: Gather daily statistics and prepare monthly statistical reports. Work collaboratively with other library departments to achieve project goals.
      POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field. Demonstrated commitment to customer service. Minimum of two years experience working in a public library or related outreach community work. Ability to engage and relate to youth from birth through middle school as well as their parents and caregivers. Ability to engage with diverse populations.
      NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Strong commitment to public service. Strong communication and outreach skills. Strong computer skills with expertise in word processing, spreadsheet and database programs. Ability to work independently after being given appropriate training. Valid CT driver’s license and good driving record.
      OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND KNOWLEDGE: Flexible. Excellent organizational skills. Energetic, motivated and creative. Ability to deal tactfully with all ages of people in a public service context.

     DESCRIPTION: The Director of Youth & Family Services is responsible for the successful development and delivery of services and programs to families, children (birth to 13), teens and young adults throughout the Library; designs and executes the strategic initiatives to address needs; coordinates collection development and selects materials for purchase; ensures effective communication with other departments.      QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES: Masters’ Degree in library science from a school accredited by the American Library Association is required. Teaching experience is a plus. Minimum five to seven years of increasingly responsible leadership experience in public services, with a concentration in youth and family services is required. Three to five years of management/supervisory experience is required. Union environment experience is preferred. Ability to establish and maintain system-wide collaborations with community agencies is required. Solid project management skills are required. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of modern library operation and administration. Thorough knowledge of and background in various types of informational materials in various formats including electronic. Strong commitment to working within a team environment is required. Solid working knowledge of all MS Office suite software is required. Adept at process management; knows how to organize people and activities. Knowledge of various technologies including social media is required. Ability to set clear objectives and measure and monitor process, progress and results, including fiscal control. Future oriented, can articulate vision of possibilities and likelihood of their success. Has broad knowledge and perspective. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both professional and non-professional, co-workers, management personnel, the public and others. Solid written and verbal communication, listening, organization and priority setting skills. Strong public relations skills. Ability to provide welcoming and effective customer service. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple priorities. Ability to think quickly, assess a situation and make a sound decision. Qualifications desired include: Bachelor’s degree required; MLS preferred. Previous experience working with children and teens. Knowledge and appreciation of literature for children and young adults. STEM programming experience desired. Strong organizational and communications skills. Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and ensure that tasks are completed accurately and on time. Strong computer and technology skills. Experience with Sierra ILS a plus. Strong commitment to warm and welcoming public service required. This is a full-time position (35 hours per week) with full benefits. Salary range $38,000-$41,000, depending on qualifications. Schedule includes two evenings per week, and every other Saturday. Youth Services Librarian I (Two Openings)

The Ferguson Library. The Ferguson Library in Stamford, CT, is seeking to fill two full-time positions with creative, enthusiastic, and customer service-oriented youth services librarians. Join a team committed to providing outstanding library service to a diverse community. The successful candidates for both open positions, one at the Main Library’s DiMattia Building and one with shared responsibilities between the Bookmobile and the Harry Bennett Branch, will enjoy working with young people, have a strong background in children’s and teen literature, and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Responsibilities include reference, and readers’ advisory, collection management, and programming activities for all ages from babies to teens. Proficiency in technology required. Children’s and Teen Librarian

The Weston Public Library seeks an energetic, creative, self-motivated and customer oriented Children’s and Teen Librarian to enhance services in our newly renovated space.  The responsibilities for this position include: developing print and digital collections for children and teens; providing reference and reader’s advisory services to children, teens, and parents; collaborating with Weston Public Schools and other youth services agencies; and working regular shifts at the Circulation desk. This position also requires development, publicizing, and implementation of children’s and teen programs. Masters of Library Science and 3 years of librarian experience, or equivalent combination of education, work experience and training required.
