Librarian (Technical Services) - U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London. GS-1410-09. I. Position Summary: This position is located in the Library of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, a four-year, accredited, degree granting institution and center of leadership development for the Coast Guard. The instant position reports to the Library Director and is a member of the Technical Services team led by the Systems Librarian/Head of Technical Services. The incumbent employs standard methods, techniques, concepts, and principles of librarianship to provide professional library services, such as cataloging and classifying materials and maintaining library collections. The incumbent assists the Systems Librarian in the authentication, activation and maintenance of access to paper and electronic serials. The employee is expected and to stay abreast of technology changes, and may make recommendations for improvements to cataloging and serial policies and procedures and workflows. II. Major Duties and Responsibilities: A. Catalogs and classifies materials, including serials, electronic resources, DVDs, microforms, and archives using established local practices and national and international standards such as Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, MARC, Resource Description and Access(RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings and classification schedules, and other metadata standards. B. Performs database maintenance when needed in the course of daily work or as a part of projects. C. Maintains quality control standards in own work by checking for and correcting errors. D. Maintains serials local holdings in OCLC and assists the Systems Librarian in purchasing, licensing, and access of serials. E. Works with the Systems Librarian to maintain Serials Solutions products, library catalog, and electronic resources and provides other systems support as required. F. Supports and helps train library technicians assigned to copy cataloging, database maintenance, processing materials, and maintaining serials. G. Assists in maintaining library collections, including government documents, special and Coast Guard collections, serials, and microforms. Assists with planning and coordinating the shifting of the collections as necessary. H. Assists in the preparation of administrative reports and maintains statistics. Helps establish policies and procedures for cataloging and serials. I. Participates in rotations at the Circulation/Reference Desk. J. Serves on library and Academy committees as appropriate. Actively participates on any assigned teams. Team tasks may include: fourth class cadet library tours, participating in the physical property inventory, shelf-reading, etc. Key Requirements: U.S. Citizenship is required. This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI). This is a federal civil service position with a salary range at the GS-09 level ($52,818 to $68,660).
