Children's and Young Adult Services Librarian - Cragin Memorial Library, Colchester

Children's and Young Adult Services Librarian - Cragin Memorial Library, Colchester, seeks a new Children’s and Young Adult Services Librarian. The ideal candidate will have programming experience, creativity, initiative, solid customer service skills and the ability to supervise a small staff with considerable independence. The Library serves a rural/suburban community of 16,000 and is a partner in the local early childhood collaborative. The Children’s Department is in a beautiful modern addition to the Library, built in 2002. The Children’s Department features a story time room and preschool play areas. The picture book collection has been reorganized by theme, increasing circulation of picture books by 50%. Children’s circulation has improved 30% over the past five years, rebounding from a period of decline. The Children’s Department staff typically provides nine story times a week during the school year, for infants through preschoolers. The Teen Room is on the upper level of the Library and offers teens a place to hang out and a solid collection of materials. The Library is applying for an LSTA grant for Teen Services to revive active programming for this age group, to be carried out by part-time library assistants under the direction of the Children’s and Young Adult Services Librarian. The Children’s and Young Adult Services Librarian provides outreach story times to local early childhood centers. The Library’s summer programs for children and teens are packed with activities and hundreds of eager readers. The Children’s and Young Adult Services Librarian is responsible for collection management of both collections, including weeding. The Children’s and Young Adult Services Librarian directly supervises a full-time Library Assistant, a part-time Programming Assistant, and part-time Library Assistants and Library Shelvers who work in the Children’s Department. Candidates must hold an ALA-accredited MLS or MSLIS, three years of prior library experience, one year of supervisory experience, and prior experience developing and conducting library programs for children and young adults. This is a full-time, union, 35-hour position, working one evening a week and one Saturday a month. Benefits include health insurance, retirement, vacation, sick time, personal days, and CLA membership. Current salary is $53,111; 2% contractual increase on July 1, 2015.
