Interim Library Director - Acton Public Library, Old Saybrook. Job Summary: Plans, organizes, and administers a comprehensive program of community library, education, recreational and related cultural services; oversees the maintenance of library building, equipment, and facilities; coordinates staffing including scheduling and hiring; enforces library policies and oversees programs. Emphasis of duties will be on operational rather than long term policy initiatives as this is an interim position filling in for the permanent director who is on a long term leave. Reports to: Acton Public Library Board and administratively reports to First Selectman. Supervision Exercised: All Library staff (2 full-time; 18-20 part-time; 2 part- time custodial). Examples of Primary Duties: (Note: This section is intended only as illustrations of work that may be performed. Receives general policy direction from Board of Directors and functional duties from the First Selectman. Plans work according to seasonal schedule. Establishes priorities within work assignment. Performs short and intermediate range planning for development of library services based on interests, needs and expectations of the community. Administers and supervises library services in the functional areas of reference, children’s services, circulation, administration, acquisitions, events and facilities management, including oversight of selection of collection materials, equipment and programs. Develops and/or approves displays and specials functions, such as book reviews, lectures and instructional activities to extend library services into the community. Recruits, supervises, trains and disciplines staff members. Provides functional supervision of custodians. Of note: The Library is currently in the process of filling a vacant Reference/Young Adult Librarian position and the search process is beginning for the Assistant Director/Children’s Librarian which will be vacant in January due to retirement. Administers adopted library budget; Prepares weekly payroll for submission to Accounting Dept.; Approves weekly accounts payable for payment processing; Oversees the collection and accounting of all incoming funds, including fees, fines, donations and intergovernmental funding. Prepares annual FY 2015-2016 budget for January 15, 2015 submission including presentations to decision making boards. Prepares narrative and statistical reports for the First Selectman, the State Library or Library board upon request. Gives a monthly report to the Library Board (one evening meeting per month). Qualifications: Master of Library Science Degree; Five years of progressively responsible work in library services, including two years’ supervision of a library department. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Ability to plan, organize and implement library services and programs; Ability to develop and administer a comprehensive budget plan; Strong computer skills necessary; Ability to work effectively with the Library Board, library staff and the community at large; A strong working knowledge of automated library systems in particular Libraries on Line (LION); Ability to train, supervise, schedule and direct staff. Salary/Hours: Full time hours (30-40) are preferred, but hours per week are negotiable. Salary dependent on experience. This is an interim position, starting as soon as possible.
