Science Librarian - Wesleyan University,
Middletown, CT. Reporting to the University Librarian, this position is
responsible for the provision of library services and resources to
undergraduates, graduate students and faculty in the sciences, and for
the management of the Science Library, a separate facility that operates
independently from—but closely with—other libraries at Wesleyan. Responsibilities:
Manages the Science Library, supervising one FTE bargaining unit staff
person and working collaboratively with them to ensure that the library
functions smoothly and effectively. Serves as liaison to faculty in
mathematics and the sciences, working closely with them to improve
library services for the sciences and encouraging input into library
initiatives which will impact faculty and students. Provides reference
service to users of the Science Library and, as a member of the regular
Olin reference desk rotation, to general library users. Reference work
may involve some weekend or evening hours. Provides group and individual
instruction on library resources and services to undergraduates,
graduate students, faculty and visiting researchers in the sciences.
Manages science collections and information resources, selecting
materials to be added to the Science collection and working with faculty
to determine which materials might be withdrawn from the collection
when necessary. Works closely with faculty, students, ITS Academic
Computing Managers, and other campus constituencies to support research
and other initiatives involving the sciences. Initiates, plans and
implements renovation, stacks maintenance and other Science Library
facilities projects. Participates in the management of the Wesleyan
University Library via membership in standing library committees and
other responsibilities. Serves on University committees and projects.
Contributes to the profession by participation in regional and national
library organizations. Minimum qualifications: MLS degree from an
accredited library school and three to five years’ experience as a
librarian providing reference service in the natural or physical
sciences; strong service orientation; commitment to working in a diverse
community; demonstrated ability to work in a team-based and collegial
environment; and knowledge of scientific publishing practices and
current trends in scholarly communication. Preferred qualifications: A
masters’ degree or doctorate in mathematics or one of the natural or
physical sciences strongly preferred. Significant experience providing
individual and group instruction in the use of scientific and general
library databases. Collection management experience in an academic
