Library Assistant - Tunxis Community College. Full-Time 12 Month - Standard Tenure Track. 35 hours/week - Evening and weekend hours required. ANTICIPATED START DATE: March 1, 2011. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate's degree or higher, together with up to two years of experience in an academic library environment. The Library Assistant is required to have demonstrated ability to perform support services in one or more functional areas of academic librarianship (specifically Circulation); demonstrated ability to interact favorably with staff, students, faculty, and the public; an enthusiasm for tasks requiring attention to detail and accuracy; and strong information technology literacy skills. Knowledge of OCLC, Ex Libris Voyager Integrated Library System, and Banner preferred. Exceptions to the degree requirements may be made for compelling reasons. RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Director of Library Services and/or Circulation Librarian, the Library Assistant is chiefly responsible for contributing to the efficient lending and responsible recovery of library materials by performing circulation services. The successful candidate will provide administrative and public service support and will contribute to the library's effective operation. The Library Assistant is required to serve on library, college, and system-level committees and will attend the annual convocation. Essential tasks will include: Charging and discharging library materials using the Ex Libris Voyager library system; examining materials for damage and completeness of sets of materials; issuing library cards and promotional materials and creating online patron records; placing holds on materials and placing holds on student records using Banner; calculating, collecting, and recording fines and fees; running reports and providing specific circulation statistics; assisting in interlibrary loan transactions; managing and controlling the appropriate circulation of reserve items; assisting in the hiring, training, supervising, and evaluation of student workers; providing basic reference assistance to library patrons; circulating non-print and audiovisual materials; checking-in and processing periodicals; coordinating the room reservation of conference and study rooms; maintaining an effective and positive rapport with College administration, faculty, students, staff, and community users; exhibiting excellent oral and written communication skills; and demonstrating the ability to continually respond to adverse situations in a diplomatic and timely manner. MINIMUM SALARY: $37,229 approximate annual.
