Librarian I, Circulation Services - Town of West Hartford. Application Deadline: Wednesday, April 2, 2008. Salary Range: $49,478 - $61,958. Job Purpose: Provides coordination of the Town's library system circulation functions and assists the public in accessing and utilizing library services and resources. Work Environment: Work is performed in a fast-paced library setting in which employees must be able to retrieve material from library stacks and/or online resources. Must be able to quickly move about the floors of the library in order to assist customers. Frequently interfaces with individuals in person and on the telephone. Other professional work is performed in a general office setting. Evening and weekend work may be required, as is traveling to various locations in the community and the region. Essential Job Functions: Assists the public in the use of library resources and equipment, material selection, and with library policy and procedures having to do with the circulation of materials. Recommends purchases for the library's circulating collection. Collaborates with other members of the management team to plan, organize, coordinate and conduct library activities. Responds to and follows up on requests for service, general inquiries or public complaints. Resolves problems with patrons within scope of authority. Supervises and directs the work of full and part time clerical staff engaged in library projects/activities including training, scheduling, assigning, overseeing and reviewing the work of circulation staff employees system-wide. Prepares or oversees the preparation of the weekly schedule and collects timesheets. Conducts staff meetings and training, which may involve staff from across the Library Department. Prepares and/or oversees production of various reports including, but not limited to reports of usage, missing/lost items, fines and fees, etc. for the department. May provide outreach services to area assisted living residences or other groups. Coordinates activities with other library departments. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. Attends supervisory meetings as requested. Additional Job Responsibilities: Promotes a customer orientation in the work group and in the department. Participates in professional development through attendance at professional association seminars and conferences. Performs related work as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: General knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and practices of modern library services including automated systems, preferably the SIRSI circulation system. Considerable knowledge of current collection development philosophy. Knowledge of literature, authors, and reader interest levels. Ability to direct, plan, assign, and evaluate work of employees in library circulation operations. Ability to understand and follow moderately complex written and oral instruction. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Ability to compile records and reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with employees and the general public in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative. Ability to work with minimal supervision and direction. Skill in the use of computer equipment and software and the ability to perform basic hardware and software troubleshooting. Proficiency in the use of desktop PC productivity software. Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from college with a Master's Degree in Library Science or a combination of education and experience deemed equivalent by the Director of Employee Services. Fluency in second language is preferred. An individual appointed to the position must satisfactorily complete a one (1) year probationary period.
