Library Assistant II - Babcock Library, Ashford

Library Assistant II - Babcock Library in Ashford, Connecticut has an opening for position of Library Assistant II, Children’s Specialist. 30 hours every 2 weeks, including every other Saturday and occasional evening hours. Vacation, sick leave and paid holidays. $14.00 per hour. Anticipated start date March 1, 2013. Duties include the following: Planning, scheduling, publicizing and hosting children’s programs, story hours and activities. Planning and coordinating lively summer reading program each year. Planning and leading activities for children during school vacations. Visiting preschools for stories and outreach. Leading a monthly book discussion group for preteens. Recommending titles for purchase to Director. Cataloging children’s materials. Maintaining cheerful and current atmosphere in Children’s area. Preparing monthly items for local newspapers and statistics for reports. Circulation desk time, including general reference and phone. Assuming essential duties of other staff members in the event of their absence. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: High School diploma or equivalent; 2 years recent pertinent experience working with children in a library setting. Enthusiasm for planning and hosting programs for children. Understanding of principles of library cataloging and familiarity with DDC. Working knowledge of desktop applications such as MS Word and Publisher. Ability to work with minimal supervision and to self-start. Ability to work as a team member and be flexible as circumstances may require. Preferred Skills: Experience with ICONN request. Experience using automated library system for cataloging and circulation. Ability to multi-task and self-start. Ashford is a busy small town that enthusiastically supports and utilizes its library.
