Head Curator/Librarian - Trinity College Watkinson Library. Trinity College (CT) invites applications and nominations for the position of Head Curator/Librarian of the Watkinson Library. With nearly 200,000 volumes, the Watkinson Library comprises the Trinity College Library special collections department. It is exceptional among small college libraries for its breadth and depth. Its holdings include late medieval manuscripts and early printed books, a vast array of 18th and 19th century literary manuscripts, diverse ephemera collections, a comprehensive collection of ornithology books, a large collection of modern private press books, and extensive and growing college archives. Renovated in 2007, the new Watkinson Library facility reflects the commitment of the College and its donors to our extraordinary collections. The Watkinson Library is housed in the College’s Raether Library and Information Technology Center (2003). The Head Curator/Librarian reports directly to the College Librarian and is responsible for providing leadership, planning, and management for the Library’s special collections, focusing on the promotion, preservation, and development of the Watkinson Library and Trinity College Archives. The Head Curator/Librarian supervises two professional librarians. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in active outreach and instruction that reinforces the importance of primary resource material for teaching and study; provide research and teaching access to the collections; assist in the planning and implementation of new technologies; and oversee work with special collections and archives while ensuring high quality operations, that will include innovative programs, exhibitions and presentations, and the use of appropriate technologies. Additionally, the candidate is expected to actively cultivate development activities; represent the Trinity Library in appropriate local regional and national venues; and serve as a member of the College Librarian’s Administrative Council. The successful candidate for the position will have an accredited Masters in Library Science or equivalent and a second Masters or Ph.D. in an area of the humanities or social sciences relating to the collections of the Watkinson Library. At least 5 years of progressive supervisory experience and working knowledge of rare books and manuscripts in a library special collection and general familiarity with overall library operations. Familiarity with digital technology as applied to the special collections environment; and a reading knowledge of at least one European language, preferably French, German or Italian. The incumbent will have excellent written and oral communications skills and have the ability work effectively with fellow professionals, faculty students and staff.
