Library Technical Assistant - Shelton Library Department. General Description. This is a responsible [technical] position relating to technical support services in the library. Work involves cataloging, database maintenance, editing of records and processing of materials. The work requires that the employee have a considerable knowledge, skill and ability in every phase of library technical support functions. Supervision Received. Works under the direction of the Head of Circulation and Technical Services (main library) and both the Branch Librarian and Branch Children’s Librarian (branch library). Example of Duties: Enters all new items into the automated system database. Searches for correct records, edits records as needed, adds items, copies or volumes to record. Supervises Library in absence of superior. (Branch LTA). Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops to broaden knowledge of library technology. Deletes bibliographic records of materials which are withdrawn from the collection. Unpack shipments, verifies contents, prepares materials for cataloging and sends invoices to supervisor. Processes materials – books, media,, etc. for incorporation into the collection and performs desk duties as needed and other duties as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of basic library methods, techniques and procedures, along with AACR 2 cataloging rules and procedures. Good knowledge of standard library technology, integrated library system and computer literacy. Good ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, follow library procedures, and maintain records. Considerable ability to perform tasks accurately. Considerable ability to maintain good working relationships with the public, library staff, and representatives from other organizations. Qualifications.  Associate’s Degree plus three years of experience in library work, or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience substituting on a year-for-year basis. Job Classification. Merit System Job Classification “11” with a wage of $27,117 to $45,117 yearly based on education & experience. Candidates who meet the requirements for this job posting will be invited to take the Merit Written Test. The Written Test is scheduled for the morning of August 25, 2014 at the Huntington Branch Library on Church Street. The top 10 applicants who successfully pass the Merit Written Test will be invited to take the Merit Oral Test.
