Library Director – Bethel Public Library

Library DirectorBethel Public Library, Bethel CT. Creative, energetic individual with strong public service orientation needed to direct all phases of library operations in a vibrant Connecticut community of 19,000 with a top-ranked school system. The Bethel Public Library was recently expanded in 2013 with a new addition to the historic Seelye House, which serves as the local history room and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The successful candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to relate well to staff, the Board, the community, and other departments of town government. Strong organizational, managerial, and sound fiscal management skills are required. The director will be required to promote outreach, public relations, and fundraising; have the ability to inspire a strong and creative staff, encouraging staff development and team building; and will have a strong grasp of twenty-first century public library trends and the technologies that support them. The Library has a staff of 22 full and part time employees, an annual budget of $850,000, circulation of 143,000+, and a collection of 129,000 items. The Bethel Public Library features a local history collection and a unique collection of documents and other memorabilia written by and pertaining to Bethel native, P. T. Barnum. In addition to the collections, the Library offers nearly 400 programs annually for people of all ages and interests. The Director works with an appointed twelve-member Board of Directors and an active Friends of the Library organization. Minimum Requirements: ALA-accredited MLS and six years of progressively responsible professional public library experience, with at least three in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity.
