Head of Facilities and Security - Russell Library, Middletown

Head of Facilities and Security - Russell Library, Middletown’s award-winning public library, seeks a Head of our Facilities and Security Department. Maintaining and ensuring a safe environment at a busy downtown library comprised of several buildings, dating as far back as the 1870s, is the major challenge. Applicants should have project management and supervisory experience, hands-on maintenance and repair skills, and knowledge of HVAC systems. The Head of Facilities and Security oversees and performs security services to ensure safety of staff, patrons, and property. The Head of Facilities and Security: Develops near-term and long-range plans and objectives for the department. Responds to emergency situations, requiring residency within 20 minutes driving time. Recommends appointments and trains, supervises and evaluates employees. Oversees the maintenance, cleaning and repair of buildings and grounds. Evaluates the safety and energy efficiency of buildings and recommends repair or replacement. Serves as liaison with architects, engineers, contractors and public officials on building repair and on emergency and security issues. Develops and administers security procedures and serves as security officer while on duty. Recommends and administers department budget. Oversees purchases of equipment, materials, supplies, and vendor contracts. The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with graduation from a vocational technical school, or successful completion of an apprenticeship training program, and five years of progressively responsible experience in building maintenance or construction work, including three years of supervisory or lead maintenance experience; or any equivalent combination of education and skills which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Experience and/or training in security, public safety, or law enforcement are also preferred. Candidate must be flexible about scheduling, have strong interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to maintain composure in difficult situations, sometimes involving unruly members of the public. The ability to perform strenuous physical work under adverse conditions is required. The salary range starts at $59,948 per year, with benefits, for a 40-hour work week.
