Library Director - E.C. Scranton Memorial Library, Madison, Connecticut. Due to retirement, the Scranton Library Board of Trustees seeks a full-time Library Director to oversee and supervise all operations of the Scranton Memorial Library in Madison, Connecticut. Madison, located on the Connecticut shoreline, is a residential community with Connecticut's longest sandy beaches. With an unspoiled natural environment and well-run, efficient town government, Madison boasts one of Connecticut's best performing public school systems. Madison is located in southern New England on the I-95 corridor halfway between New York City and Boston. Scranton Memorial Library which is located in an historic building boasts a circulation over 120,000 volumes with a circulation of 16.5 per capita. Examples of Library Director Duties Include: Create an overall vision and culture to meet the changing needs of Madison. Oversees and performs professional library and information work involving the leadership and coordination of all library services. Cultivates and implements vision of Trustees, patrons, and community to craft Library culture, services and features. Oversees operational aspects of library. Recruits, develops and oversees the library's professional and non-professional staff. Prepares budget estimates, then directs, and accounts for expenditures of library funds in accordance with appropriations. Prepares and presents financial and statistical reports as appropriate. Administers employee benefits plan including pension. Directs the development, repair and maintenance of the Library building and other properties owned by the Library. Oversees the library's development activities. Confers with State agencies, other public libraries, corporations, and community groups in the development of library programs for the Town and assists in coordinating interlibrary program efforts. Actively participate in community and civic organizations. REQUIREMENTS: E.C. Scranton Memorial Library is seeking a visionary; a creative individual capable of drawing out and prioritizing the needs of Madison and creating a library environment that meets them. Candidates must have an MLS degree from an accredited school and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in library administration and staff supervision including three (3) years in the supervision of a public library major department or as a director of a public library. A combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to successfully meet the requirements of the position may be considered. A successful candidate must demonstrate comfort with current technology, use excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, possess the ability to read, analyze and interpret business and professional journals, financial reports and legal documents. Candidates must be skilled in sensitively and effectively responding to inquiries and complaints from customers, regulatory agencies and the business community. Must have the ability to effectively prepare and present information to top management and public groups as well as the ability to define problems, use appropriate technology to collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to appropriately deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables is important. Candidates must have proven leadership ability, initiative, self monitoring and organizational skills, good communication skills and the ability to articulate the needs and services of the library to all its constituents. Candidates must possess vision, creativity, motivational and technological skills. Must express a willingness to become involved in the community and understand its needs as well as recognize future library trends and move the E.C. Scranton Memorial Library in those directions.
