Director of Children's Library Services - City of Norwalk invites applications for the position of: Director of Children's Library Services. Salary: Hourly: $46.00 - $54.37; Annually: $90,041.00 - $106,426.00. DESCRIPTION: Plans, organizes and supervises library programs for pre-school and elementary library users as well as parents and child caregivers; performs professional library services in assisting library patrons in the selection and use of library materials. Coordinates children’s services throughout library system and supervises the Branch Children’s Librarian. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Receives oral or written direction from Director. Plans and organizes work according to season of year, special events and regular library schedule. Establishes task priorities within working unit. Assigns regular and daily tasks to professional and clerical staff. Develops and conducts programs for children and young adults to encourage reading, viewing and listening skills and to use library facilities and materials. Examines professional publications and other sources for selection of books, periodicals and related materials. Builds collection of books, periodicals and audio-visual materials through independent selection and consultation with staff members. Assembles and arranges displays of books and other materials. Manages the circulation and use of library books and materials. Oversees the electronic transfer of information and remote computer terminal operation in processing circulation, registrations, overdue materials and billings. Provides reference and information service to library users using print, internet and other formats. Develops brochures, booklets and newsletters to publicize the services and resources of the Library. Prepares reading lists for school and community distribution. Prepares publicity, bibliographies and other information for the library webpage and updates same regularly. Assists in near-term and long-range planning of library services. Interviews applicants for employment as Library staff. Provides training and supervision to professional staff, library assistants, clerks, shelvers and volunteers. Makes budget recommendations for the Children’s Library and administers the approved budget for the unit. Prepares regular and narrative reports for the Library Director and the Library Board upon request. Coordinates programs and activities with school librarians, teachers, parent groups and community organizations. Conducts programs. Invites speakers and performers to participate in special programs. Participates in professional library organizations. Performs general library work as needed. TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS: The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a Master’s degree in Library Science, and four years of progressively responsible public library experience, including two years as supervisor of a Children’s Library division. Ability to relate and interact with school and cultural organizations. Ability to apply principles of Library Science to solve practical problems in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to prepare and deliver brief, concise and attractive reports of library services and facilities both orally and in writing. A working knowledge of computer applications for library services.
