GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This class of position involves responsible specialized professional library work with an emphasis on services and programs to youth, and the parents, caregivers, educators and other family members of young people. ASSIGNMENT LEVEL I: Responsible for providing quality patron service to children, young adults and adults in the Youth Services Department. As an accountable team member participates in planning and goal setting, assessing needs and providing services in accordance with library policies and practices. Backs up team members, and assist others as needed. Reports to a Librarian III or Library Manager. Position is located at the Perrot Library and the successful candidate will be appointed to the Youth Services Librarian I and the examination process will be based on the knowledge, skill and abilities and minimum qualifications for the Level I. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, LEVEL I - Master’s degree in Library Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university plus a general knowledge of library procedures and six (6) months experience in library services for children, children’s literature or childhood development as it relates to learning. ESSENTIAL FEATURES: May manage and maintain the Library website, works directly with patrons to trouble shoot home access problems. In cooperation with library collection managers and material selectors, may selects web links and services for the Library website. May select, classify and catalog all library materials in all formats. Works with librarians on other teams to develop selection profiles and evaluate use of collection. Uses the Library’s online catalog to analyze circulation trends and discover ways to enhance library collections. Responsible for all activities relating to Youth Services materials collection and maintains such collections; evaluates and updates the collection as needed. Works with professional, para-professional, and clerical staff within library and areas of primary responsibility among teams. Trains and supports staff, develops training materials and conducts training programs for staff and public; may interview and recommend part-time staff. Provides quality public service through responding to reference questions, readers advisory, and helping patrons use library materials and equipment and assisting them with their use of the Internet. Instructs patrons in the use of online and local databases; creates and maintains databases of local information. Works and negotiates with database vendors and periodical distributors to provide Library patrons with electronic information and print materials in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Serves as liaison with Greenwich schools, or other groups as determined by the Team; responsible for planning and performing story hour and educational library programs. Attends professional meetings and staff conferences; creates and carries out an individualized plan for updating and broadening information, technical, communication and team skills. Responsible for scheduling, reference coverage and may oversee and supervise Librarian I’s and support staff as needed. Performs related work as required. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature and current materials being published in all formats. Knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials and administrative practices and willingness to work with patrons of all ages. Knowledge of early childhood development as it relates to learning. Skilled in the operation of a wide variety of computer, audiovisual and office equipment related to library operations including the use of computer hardware and a variety of office and library software programs. Ability to interact and communicate effectively and tactfully with children, young adults and adults. Ability to work well with volunteer and community groups. Ability to work independently and with other team members to carry out all of the tasks and charges that are required to give excellent service. ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR ASSIGNMENT LEVEL II: Considerable knowledge of general interest levels and types of printed, audio-visual and electronic resources by various authors, producers or composers for Youth Services. Considerable subject knowledge background in programming, reader’s advisor services and reference in children’s services for Youth Services. Working knowledge of internet databases and database management; provide input regarding internet structure and website design. Ability to effectively identify, plan and communicate team goals and responsibilities. Ability to train and motivate team/unit members. Ability to negotiate with vendors of library goods and services. Ability to oversee subordinates and clerical staff. SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS FOR LEVEL II: Some positions may require hands-on experience maintaining a website. LEVEL II Minimum Requirements: Master’s degree in Library Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university plus a general knowledge of library procedures and two (2) years experience in library services for children, children’s literature or childhood development as it relates to learning.
