Librarian - Fairfield Museum and History Center

Librarian - The Fairfield Museum and History Center in Fairfield, CT seeks an energetic and innovative librarian to lead its research and special collections library. The Fairfield Museum and History Center is a 13,000 square foot museum, library and community education facility on Fairfield's historic Town Green. The librarian will guide the development of this important historical and genealogical library based on the century's-old collection of the Fairfield Historical Society. The library is home to some 12,000 volumes, more than 200 distinct manuscript collections, rich collections of 18th and 19th century journals, diaries, rare books, architectural drawings, as well as 3,000 photographs, 300 maps, and ephemera. The library is a prime research resource for the history of southwestern Connecticut and is considered one of the best repositories for colonial history in the state. It serves researchers across the nation as well as internationally. The collection's card catalog is poised to join the Fairfield Public Library's online catalog, providing ready online access the library's records. The librarian will be responsible for the administration, care, and management of all library collections of the Fairfield Museum and History Center and the oversight of public access to those collections. Job activities include developing and implementing student and scholar programs that encourage broad use of library resources, coordinating the application of new technologies to improve public access, guiding research and special projects, processing manuscript collections, managing book and archival storage, conducting collection development and preservation activities and developing strategies for expanding utilization of library collections. The librarian will participate in collaborative initiatives with colleagues at the Museum as well as with other local and regional libraries, universities and library organizations. Job Requirements: MLS from an accredited library program, coursework or experience in developing library based public programs, undergraduate or graduate work in American history, an understanding of genealogical research and archival administration, an outgoing personality and ability to reach out and work with users of all ages. Experience with database management is a plus. Ability to set priorities, and work independently and collaboratively, as well as excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. This is a full-time, senior management position. Salary $50,000 with health and other benefits package. EOE.
