Business Manager - New Britain Public Library

 
Reports to:
Library Director
Salary range: $70,000 to $80,000 per year

Position Summary: This is the second ranking employee in the Library and serves as Acting Director in the Director's absence. The position functions as controller and is responsible for the management of all library business operations. Other responsibilities include project research and planning, contract negotiation and management, and training and supervision of staff (Bookkeeper, Maintenance Staff and Contract Security).

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in business, accounting, or related field with at least five years of progressively responsible experience in an administrative position involving the application of generally accepted accounting principles and the administration of payroll and personnel policies in a union environment. Three years supervisory experience. Knowledge of facility, security and maintenance processes desirable. Non-profit experience beneficial. Valid CT driver license and ability to travel to other locations is required. Proficiency with QuickBooks as well as MSOffice, including excellent spreadsheet skills.

Must have excellent communication skills - orally, in writing and by phone. Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills. Ability to communicate in Spanish or Polish or another foreign language prevalent in the community, in addition to English, useful.

Duties and Responsibilities: Establishes, implements and maintains financial controls and reporting systems following generally accepted accounting practices and federal and state regulations. Assists the HR Manager in human resources operations. Oversees central purchasing. Assists in development of Library budget process and procedures. Maintains budget control and writes budget reports. Develops grant applications and Requests for Proposals. Provides facility, security, and maintenance planning. Tracks and deals with payroll, pension, unemployment, worker's compensations, insurance claims, and all required federal and state reporting. Serves as the Director's agent in carrying out the business operations of the Library. Participates in library planning, implementation and evaluation as appropriate. Makes presentations to the Trustees and Committees of the Trustees. Directly supervises and evaluates bookkeeper and maintenance personnel and monitors contract security staff performance. Administers union contracts and participates in contract negotiation. May serve as Acting Library Director in the absence of the Director. Implements best practices and standards in the financial processes. Performs related work as required.
