Position Overview:
The Director of The Hettinger Library is responsible for all aspects of
the library programs and facilities and seeks to ensure that the
library’s academic and technology resources complement, enhance, and
extend the school’s educational program. S/he will collaborate closely
with the Director of Academics, the Director of Technology, Department
Team Leaders, and the faculty. The Director of The Hettinger Library
reports to the Director of Academics and is a member of the Committee
for Academic Excellence.
Responsibilities include the following:
General:
Maintain an attractive, dynamic, current, and well-stocked library
conducive to reading, studying, and research. Develop, acquire, and
maintain a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the
students, the instructional strategies of the school’s faculty, and the
school's mission. Plan and organize the library media program. Manage
the library budget. Maintain, be familiar with, and promote Rectory’s
online databases. Communicate with school staff and community about
library-based activities and programs. Collaborate with academic
department team leaders on specific needs and growth opportunities. Work
collaboratively with faculty on uses of and availability of resources.
Research and evaluate new and emerging information technologies.
Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness.
Instructional: Empower
students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, and
knowledgeable researchers. Provide instruction for students in the use
of library resources including the effective and ethical use of media.
Help students develop good study habits and information retrieval
skills. Administer Project READ for grades 5-9 (see website for information). Create and administer the summer reading program for Grades 5-9. Host elementary class visits. Plan for Enrichment series (see website for information).
Professional Practices:
Demonstrate a knowledge of literature and has a passion for lifelong
learning. Demonstrate initiative to make contributions to the total
school program. Accept and implement as appropriate constructive
suggestions. Respond to all parental inquiries and initiate parental
contact when appropriate. Network with local librarians, maintain active
memberships in professional associations, and promote the school in the
wider community. Facilitate personal growth through professional
development opportunities. Develop policies and programming that will
establish standards for and definitions of information literacy and
bolster support for library services that contribute to an
information-literate student body.
Additional duties assigned
usually include serving as a student advisor, monitoring a study hall,
creating and monitoring an elective, and assisting with student
activities. In addition to the library media specialist
responsibilities, the successful candidate is also expected to serve in
shared dorm duty in one of the school residences.
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in an appropriate educational field. Master’s
degree preferred. Experience working with elementary and middle school
children. A demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative
environment. A passion for independent school education as well as the
professionalism, energy, and commitment necessary to achieve the
responsibilities of this position. Familiarity with automated
circulation systems (Destiny). Excellent interpersonal skills.
