Children’s Services Librarian – E.C. Scranton Memorial Library, Madison

Children’s Services Librarian (full-time, 35 hours/week) – The E.C. Scranton Memorial Library, located in the beautiful coastal town of Madison, CT (population 18,000) seeks a dynamic, team-oriented Children’s Services Librarian. Working under the supervision of the Head of Children’s Services, duties include developing print and digital collections for children ages birth to sixth grade; planning and conducting storytimes and afterschool programs; providing outreach services to local schools; creating flyers, bulletin boards, and social media posts to promote children’s programs and services; providing reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons; and collaborating with the Teen and Adult Services Librarians to provide multi-age, library-wide programs. This position is also responsible for the supervision of the Children’s Department in the absence of the Department Head.
     Qualified candidates must have an MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, knowledge of current trends and best practices in children’s library service, familiarity with the developmental, recreational and educational needs of young children, the ability to learn and stay current with emerging technologies, excellent customer service skills, and strong written and verbal communication skills. Public library experience and a working knowledge of the Millennium iii integrated library system a plus. Recent MLS graduates or those who have completed substantial work towards their MLS are encouraged to apply. Starting salary is $49,140 with generous health, vacation, and retirement benefits.
