Part-time Museum Curator and Librarian - Akin Free Library, Natural History Museum and Historical Society Museum.
Seeking an individual who is inspired by a love of history,
architecture, nature and community to bring the Akin Free Library, Natural
History Museum and Historical Society Museum to life in the 21st
century. 20 hours a week – 3 hours on-site every Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. Responsibilities: Work with the Board, volunteers, students,
scholars and other community organizations on museum and library
matters, including tours, research projects, annual art show and
educational programs. Report to the Board on all museum and library
matters. Catalogue, restore, mount, clean and cross reference “antique”
books, historic and natural history artifacts, objects and information.
Prepare and maintain digital files, databases, signage and labels.
Work with the Board to adopt conservation/preservation policies and
techniques, with particular emphasis on maintaining the historic look
and feel of the Akin Free Library building. Work with the Board on (i)
Pawling High School scholarship program administration, (ii) recruitment
and retention of volunteers, (iii) grant writing, (iv) funding raising
(including event preparation and planning), (v) website maintenance
(vi) social media outreach, (vii) special projects; (viii) identifying
annual meeting speakers and (ix) coordinating Akin Hall events and
activities (book clubs, readings, mini exhibitions, theme tours) that
attract visitors. Maintain mailing lists and handle mailings, including
meeting notices, fundraising, annual reports. Assist with Board and
annual membership meeting preparation. Attend Board meeting and
transcribe minutes. Skills and minimum qualifications: Knowledge of
history, material culture, artifact genres, basic preservation
techniques, preferably some expertise in American history and biology.
Tech savvy: Quicken, Xcel, photography, catalogue systems, maintaining
databases, updating website, inaugurating and maintaining instagram or
other social media, on-line exhibitions. Good people skills, innovative
thinking, fund raising experience desirable, Education requirement:
