Children’s Librarian - Darien Library

Full-Time Children’s Librarian Position - The innovative Darien Library (CT) –one of the busiest and most highly-ranked public libraries of its size in the country - seeks a creative, energetic, and dedicated individual to join an incredibly active Children’s Department as a full-time Children’s Librarian. The successful candidate will have a passion for public service, knowledge of children’s literature, experience working with children of various ages, and a willingness to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment. Qualifications and Skills: MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library sciences or information sciences graduate program. Two to four years of increasing responsibility in a children’s library setting preferred. Considerable knowledge of the developmental needs and abilities of children and the available library materials and services. Considerable ability in oral and written communication. Proficiency with basic office applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Docs, as well as familiarity with downloadable technology, social media, and various devices. Willingness to travel in and around the Darien community for outreach visits; car preferred. Available to work one evening per week and one weekend per month. Responsibilities: Coordinate outreach visits to local schools and organizations and serve as a liaison to local school media specialists, teachers, PTO’s, and scout leaders. Participate in collection development of print and non-print material for children birth through age twelve. Plan and conduct programs for children and caregivers that stimulate and enrich early literacy skill-development. Provide exemplary reference and reader’s advisory service to children, parents, caregivers, and teachers. Participate in creating content for the Library website, including blog posts, booklists, and videos. Starting Salary: $50,700 (37.5 hours per week).
