Archivist / Taxonomy Librarian - National Fire Protection Association, MA

Archivist / Taxonomy Librarian - National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Quincy, MA. The Archivist / Taxonomy Librarian is responsible for acquiring, cataloging and managing content in NFPA’s archives; and for creating, developing and maintaining a taxonomy for the Association’s digital assets. A member of the library team, the archivist is an active contributor to research activities and projects, and verifies information using NFPA catalogs, FileMakerPro, SharePoint, commercial databases and the Internet. As part of the digital asset management team, works with end users, content providers, and stakeholders to develop and enhance the taxonomy for information retrieval. RESPONSIBILITIES: Archives: Manage the use and collection development of the Association archives. Identify and acquire new NFPA publications, regardless of format; seek older publications not in the collection. Arrange and describe archival collections, create finding aids, catalog new acquisitions and update MARC records. Create, maintain, and provide electronic access to NFPA’s image collections. Manage digital preservation projects for individual items and collections. Oversee conservation and preservation of materials. Digital Asset Management-Taxonomy: Assist in the selection, development and future enhancements of a system for managing NFPA’s digital assets. Develop a structure for a controlled vocabulary for NFPA’s digital assets, using nationally-recognized indexing, metadata and taxonomy standards. Collaborate with Association-wide users and creators of digital materials to develop a controlled vocabulary. Develop user documentation and training. Train content providers and searchers. Library: Conduct research for NFPA staff. Maintain the Library’s website and intranet pages. Maintain access to and update local databases. Assist with walk-in, email, and telephone inquiries. REQUIREMENTS: A Masters in Library and Information Science or a minimum of two years in an archives management experience; hands-on knowledge of taxonomy creation, including metadata, content classification, and controlled vocabularies; knowledge of conservation and preservation principles and procedures; knowledge of LCSH, MARC format, and standards-based metadata schema, Dublin Core, XML, XMP; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; strong communication skills; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to work independently and take initiative. Desired: experience or a degree in engineering, publishing, or fire protection engineering. NFPA provides an excellent salary / benefit package.
