Librarian - Fairfield Museum and History Center

Librarian - The Fairfield Museum and History Center in Fairfield, CT seeks a full-time Librarian to lead the development of its special collections library. The library is integral to the museum’s mission to celebrate and cultivate stories from multiple points of view and to use history to create an accessible public forum. The Fairfield Museum and History Center is a 13,000 square foot museum, library and community education facility located on Fairfield’s historic Town Green. Its library is home to approximately 12,000 volumes, more than 220 distinct manuscript collections, rich collections of 18th and 19th century journals, diaries, rare books, architectural drawings, as well as 3,000 photographs, 300 maps, and ephemera. The library is a prime resource for the history and genealogy of southwestern Connecticut, serving researchers from across the nation as well as internationally. The collection’s card catalogue has recently joined Fairfield Public Library’s online SIRSI catalog. The Librarian will work closely with museum staff to design and implement programs that introduce and support students, families and adults in the process of historical research and exploration. Job activities include providing reference assistance, interpreting resource catalogs, managing the care and organization of library collections, coordinating the application of new technologies to improve public access, guiding research and special projects, processing manuscript collections, developing strategies for expanding utilization of library collections, and leading collections development. The librarian will participate in collaborative initiatives with other regional libraries, universities and partner organizations. Job Requirements: MLS from an accredited library program or advanced degree in Public History or similar discipline that includes coursework or experience in developing a broad range of library-based public programs, undergraduate or graduate work in American history, an understanding of genealogical research and resources, experience with manuscript and archival administration, a community-focused outgoing personality and ability to reach out and work with users of all ages. Experience with database management and SIRSI is a plus. Ability to set priorities, and work independently and collaboratively, as well as excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
