Library Associate, Children's Services - New Britain Public Library

Reports to: Head of Children’s Services
Starting Salary: $22.00 per hour
Schedule: Full-time position (37.5 hours per week), including at least one evening per week and alternate Fridays and Saturdays.

Position Summary: Responsible for in-library and outreach programs and providing reference and reader’s advisory services. Participates in materials selection and collection maintenance.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two years’ experience in a public library, Children’s Services preferred. Demonstrated ability to work with children. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to interact with a wide variety of people. Considerable knowledge of children’s literature and child development. Computer literacy. Proficiency in Polish, Spanish, or other language prevalent in New Britain preferred.

Responsibilities: Plans and implements programs and class/group visits as assigned for children ages preschool through 5th grade, and for adults who work with children. Provides reference and reader’s advisory services as scheduled. Participates in materials selection and collection maintenance. Recommends and orders materials assigned by department manager. Researches and compiles annotated booklists or other devices for encouraging reading and the dissemination of information, including the library’s website. Participates in departmental, institutional, and regional meetings as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.
