The
Minor Memorial Library of Roxbury, CT seeks a tech-savvy and customer
service oriented individual to fill a new position of Technical
Reference and Youth Programmer. This position will be the primary
technology resource for all patrons. Other duties include programming
for children and teens.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in educating staff and patrons on library technologies and
systems including the library’s ILS, e-books and e-audiobooks, online
databases, and website. Provide support to public workstations including
public use computers, OPAC, and business center equipment. Assist
patrons and staff with routine computer problems such as scanning and
copying, paper jams, restarting programs, replacing shortcut icons,
using browsers, connecting to the Internet. Develop, plan, and deliver
(in-person and virtual) innovative and engaging programs for children
(through high school) and families including regular weekly and monthly
offerings, special events/programs to build skills in basic literacy,
STE(A)M, the maker movement and new emerging technologies. Develop new
programming that offers opportunities for community teens to engage with
the library. Promote youth/student programming and services via press
releases, social media, and library website. Assist in maintaining
collections as needed. Collaborate and coordinate with Region 12 schools
and neighboring public libraries to enhance services to young people
and families in our area. Assist with shelving, organizing, and
maintaining a welcoming library. Circulate materials to patrons and
provide general customer service.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to operate and troubleshoot a wide variety of computer
equipment, audio-visual equipment and office equipment related to
library functions. Knowledge of or ability to learn about current
library technologies and electronic resources; library catalog software;
other software or apps as they become appropriate. Knowledge of social
media including Instagram and Facebook and ability to update the
library’s website via WordPress. Demonstrated ability to communicate
clearly, both verbally and in writing, to staff and patrons who lack
technical knowledge. Working knowledge of library principles, methods
and techniques and the ability to make decisions based on established
policies and procedures. Previous working experience with children,
preferably in an early education or elementary education environment, is
essential. Knowledge of children’s literature and publishing in order
to perform collection development and advise young readers and adults.
Knowledge of (or the ability to learn) current trends in library service
to children and teens. Ability to engage children of all abilities and
backgrounds with a patient, enthusiastic, and genuine demeanor. Ability
to think quickly, handle interruptions, maintain self-control, and adapt
to stressful situations with children and their adults. Ability to
manage multiple projects at one time, take initiative, and self-impose
deadlines. Ability to interact positively and equitably with families
and patrons of diverse backgrounds and abilities, ensuring a consistent
outreach that builds engagement and loyalty to the library. Must be
solution oriented, with good problem solving skills and the ability to
research problems using a variety of sources.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that
must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential
functions of this job. Moderate to substantial physical effort is
required to perform duties under typical work conditions. The employee
must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with
reasonable accommodations. Generally, the employee must be able to lift
up to 30 pounds from ground level to waist level and be able to
push/pull carts of library books and other materials. Must be able to
bend and stretch to reach materials on very low and very high shelves.
Must be able to bend, squat, or kneel occasionally throughout work
shift. Must be able to reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger,
grasp, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls throughout
the work day. Must be able to sit, stand and/or walk throughout work
shift. The employee is frequently required to speak and hear at a
conversational level. Specific vision abilities required by this job
include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision,
depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
HOURS & COMPENSATION:
$20/hour. 15-20 hours a week including occasional evenings and rotating
Saturdays. Library hours are: Monday 12-7, Wednesday 10-5, Thursday
12-5, Friday 10-5, Saturday 10-2.
