Adult Services & Outreach Librarian - Rockville Public Library, CT

     Wage Classification: E-4A - $69,030.16 - $87,849.19

     General Statement of Duties: A very responsible technical position creating library adult programming and ensuring the library is meeting the needs of the community through outreach efforts.
     Supervision Received: Works under the general direction of the Library Director.
     Supervision Exercised: Performs managerial duties including training staff, resolving customer disputes, and directing library operations in absence of the Library Director.
     Essential Job Functions: Initiates, plans, oversees, and conducts a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by adults including: films, concerts, reading clubs, speakers and performers, and other special events. Evaluate presenters to maintain a set of quality program options for staff at branches, which fulfill the needs of diverse communities and target audiences. Advises appropriate library staff of upcoming programs for posting on the website, social media, and other communication channels. Builds relationships and networks with internal and external partners to fulfill the library’s mission. Collaborates with community groups to expand and promote library services, and participate in outreach events. Serves as a representative/liaison in external library and community meetings, and communicates relevant information to Library Director and other pertinent staff. Creates a diverse collection that meets the needs of the community. Assists director in selection and weeding of materials for Adult print collection. Purchases materials for e-collection on a monthly basis. Provides informational and/or technology assistance to library customers. Matches customers’ needs with information and resources in a meaningful, appropriate, and professional manner, in a virtual setting or in the community. Compiles information and prepares statistical reports. Regular and punctual attendance.
     MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
     Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, practices, research methods and and materials; thorough knowledge of reader interest levels, books, authors and reference resources to be considered in developing the collection of a public library with a popular materials focus; knowledge of current trends in library technologies and services; experience with social media marketing strategies and tools; knowledge of professional librarian reference and research methods. High level of professionalism and experience in supervision. Knowledge of library literature and professional library organizations and networks. Strong public service focus, excellent customer services skills and demonstrated connection with the community. Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills. Critical thinking skills with the ability to draw conclusions or approaches to problems to implement solutions; ability to recruit, supervise, train and evaluate staff; ability to foster relationships and deal effectively with officials, business owners, outside agencies, employees, and the general public. Ability to work both independently and inclusively as part of a team. Ability to assess needs, initiate, organize and execute public programs in a library setting applicable to the population; ability to acquire working knowledge of community resources. Ability to manage projects including needs assessment, goal setting, strategic development, implementation, resource management and outcome evaluation. Ability to prepare and publicly present reports in a clear and concise manner; ability to maintain statistical records. Must be computer proficient with the ability to learn software programs specific to the job. Ability to work evenings and weekends. A Police background check will be required.
     Experience & Training: Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS), with at least three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in library administration, of which at least one (1) year of supervisory experience. Experience working with diverse populations. Experience planning and conducting programs for adults; any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
