Substitute Reference Librarian - The
Berlin-Peck Memorial Library is seeking friendly, engaging substitute
librarians to join our team. The ideal candidates will enjoy connecting
with the public, engaging with children, teens, and adults, and have an
interest in serving a wide variety of needs at the children’s desk and
adult reference desk. Duties involve working directly with the public in
a variety of ways including providing reference, readers advisory and
technology support, answering the phone, and assisting with programs as
needed. Excellent customer service and technology skills required. Hours
will vary but will include day and evening hours and Saturdays
throughout the year. MLIS required or within 1 semester of completion.
This position is a non-bargaining unit position (non-union). Salary is

Job Function:
Under the direction of the Department Head, the substitute reference
librarian provides professional library services including reference and
readers advisory for children and adults, advises on technology related
services, and assists the public in use of library resources.
Typical Duties, Responsibilities, Tasks & Assignments:
Provide reference and readers advisory to patrons of all ages. Assist
patrons in using the online catalog, databases, computers, copy machine,
and other electronic resources. Conduct searches for information using a
variety of resources including library databases, internet, reference
manuals, newspapers, magazines, and other materials to assist patrons.
Evaluates information sources and advises patrons. Implement special
duties, as determined by the Department Heads, on an as-needed basis
including assistance with library programs, promotional materials, and
promotion of library resources.
Special Skills & Requirements:
A Master’s Degree in library science from a school accredited by the
American Library Association is required or within 1 semester of
completion of degree. Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques
of modern library operation is preferred. Ability to think quickly,
assess a situation and make sound decisions. Must be able to perform
continuous reaching and lifting of moderate to heavy material up to 25
lbs.
