Executive Director - The Farmington Libraries is searching for a new Executive Director. The
position reports to the Library Board of Trustees. This is a full time
position with a competitive salary and benefits package.
Introduction: The Town of Farmington is a residential suburb in the
greater Hartford area, located along the scenic Farmington River. This
historic town is home to 25,340 residents, scenic bike and walking
trails, the Hill-Stead Museum and Stanley-Whitman House. The Farmington
Libraries, while sharing a unique relationship with the Town of
Farmington and the Farmington Village Green and Library Association
(FVGLA), enjoy a strong community base, dedicated leadership, an
excellent collection and an enthusiastic staff.
The
Executive Director: The Executive Director provides both strategic and
tactical leadership to the Board, the Libraries’ working team and the
Farmington community. This highly visible position requires a
comprehensive understanding of library operations including management
of library systems, human resources, facilities, information systems,
communications and organizational operations. The Executive Director
must possess effective interpersonal skills coupled with an ability to
produce positive public relations outcomes. The Executive Director
oversees an annual budget of nearly $3 million, and a staff of 14
full-time and 24 part-time positions.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Library Board of Trustees, the Executive Director
oversees an organization where innovation and creativity are encouraged.
The Executive Director’s responsibilities include all aspects of
operations and administration, with full responsibility for personnel,
fiscal management, the development of operating and capital budgets, and
establishing partnerships throughout the community while working
collaboratively with the Board, FVGLA, the Town of Farmington, as well
as other agencies, community groups and businesses.
Qualifications: A Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library
Information Science from an ALA accredited program and five years of
progressively responsible library administrative experience, including
supervision of staff. The candidate must understand our motto of

community, team-building talent and superior verbal and written
communication skills. The ideal Executive Director will be an
outstanding leader, effective advocate, relationship-builder,
collaborator, communicator, innovator and strategic thinker with
demonstrated success in initiating and managing large-scale projects and
proven success working with a governing board.
