Librarian I (Youth & Family Learning) - The Russell Library (Middletown, CT) seeks a creative, innovative, and
outwardly-focused individual to elevate our services to “exceptional” by
coordinating our teen programs and services as part of our Youth and
Family Learning team. The Library is poised to become a transformational

Middletown is a vibrant, growing and extremely diverse community of
nearly 48,000 residents, located on the Connecticut River, in the
center of the Nutmeg State. Home to two colleges and universities, a
thriving downtown, a rich cultural and dining scene, and a unique
combination of urban, suburban and rural life, Middletown has something
to offer everyone. Founded in 1875, the Russell Library is a 501(c)3
organization that serves as the principal public library for the City of
Middletown, with a full range of services aimed at 21st-century users.
The Library Board of Trustees and library staff are currently engaged in
a strategic planning process to set a course for success in community
transformation in the coming years.
The Librarian I is responsible for planning and implementing teen
programs and services. As part of our Youth & Family Learning team,
the Librarian I will also provide reference and reader’s advisory
services, assist patrons in accessing library resources, select for and
maintain their assigned collection(s), develop community partnerships,
and represent the Library through outreach. The successful candidate
will demonstrate enthusiasm for working with youth and young adults as
well as an understanding of emerging trends in services to ages 0-20.
They must possess strong technology skills and commit to continually
refreshing that skill set. Experience with teens and/or school systems
is strongly preferred.
Minimum qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Library Science
or a comparable relevant graduate degree and some working or internship
experience in a library or other intensive customer-service
environment. 35 hours per week; evenings and weekends required. Union.
Starting salary: $54,672, plus a competitive employee benefits
