Technical Services Assistant - The Brookfield Library. Hourly rate: $17.00, Part-Time. General Statement of Duties: Under the direction of the Information Technology Librarian, work involves responsibility for a variety of technical procedures, copy cataloging, entering materials in ILS (Integrated Library System), resolving problems in procedure, and assistance in file and records maintenance. May make routine library technical services decisions. May work limited hours at the library’s Circulation Desk.
     Examples of Duties: Plans and organizes work according to standard procedures, and regular library schedule. Confers with supervisor in developing short/long term planning for technical services department. Enters all adult and juvenile fiction and non-fiction, paperbacks, audio and video materials into the Bibliomation system. Processes reserves on newly entered library materials. Completes book processing based upon library procedures, and creates spine labels when necessary. Uses Bibliomation Acquisitions module. Sends information to Bibliomation for cataloging records of items not in database. Changes holding records and spine labels of materials being reassigned Dewey numbers. Responsible for processing and preparing all gifts and donated materials for the library. Withdraws library materials: deletes titles from database, and prepares items for recycling when appropriate. Makes minor repairs to books, materials and equipment. Resolves routine problems in technical procedures. Performs additional duties as required to insure the timely processing of all Library materials. Required to lift/push medium to heavy weights, e.g. cartons of books or book carts filled with library materials.
     Basic Knowledge: Knowledge of basic office procedures. Working knowledge of current Windows software. A working knowledge of MARC cataloging. Ability to type accurately. Ability to maintain accurate files and records. Ability to deal cooperatively with others. Good knowledge of basic library methods, techniques and procedures. Good knowledge of automated systems as they apply to book processing. Some knowledge of reader interest levels. Good computer skills; familiar with word processing, spreadsheet software. Good ability in oral and written communications. Considerable ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Good ability to maintain library records and carry out library procedures. Considerable ability to pay attention to detail. Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, and associates.
     Supervision Exercised: May supervise volunteers working on processing, withdrawals, or mending.
     Qualifications: High school graduate plus two years of appropriate formal post-secondary school courses or the equivalent in practical experience. Library experience preferred. Keyboarding and computer skills. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers. Knowledge of library policies, procedures and administrative practices.
