West Haven Public Library
General Description: Provides financial information to management by
analyzing, recording and communicating accounting data; preparing
accurate financial reports. Supervision Received Works under the
general supervision of the Library Director. Hours of work This
position is a 20-24 hour a week job. Examples of Duties: Directly
responsible for closing of monthly financial records. Complete monthly
financial report for Library Director and Board of Trustees. Prepare
rolling 12 month forecast and assist in preparation of annual budget.
Manage clerical staff. Review monthly consolidated financial package
presented to Board of Directors on a monthly basis. Prepares asset,
liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing
account information. Maintains and examines financial transactions by
entering account information. Recommends financial actions by analyzing
accounting options. Summarizes current financial status by collecting
information; preparing balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and
other reports. Substantiates financial transactions by auditing
documents. Maintains accounting controls by preparing and recommending
policies and procedures. Guides accounting clerical staff by
coordinating activities and answering questions. Reconciles financial
discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information. Secures
financial information by completing data base backups. Maintains
financial security by following internal controls. Prepares payments by
verifying documentation, and requesting disbursements. Answers
accounting procedure questions by investigating and implementing
accounting policy and regulatory practices. Complies with federal,
state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and
new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising
management on needed actions. Prepares special financial reports by
collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends.
Maintains ethical integrity and protects operations by keeping financial
information confidential. Maintains professional and technical
knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing industry
publications; establishing professional networks. Accomplishes the
result by performing the duty. Contributes to team work and positive
organizational culture by accomplishing related results as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must pay attention to detail, accuracy
and timeliness. Must be highly skilled in dealing with financial and
numeric data. Must be highly skilled in use of Excel Spreadsheets and
Peachtree or QuickBooks. Must be skilled in use of MS Word and must be a
very good writer in order to handle the occasional administrative needs
of the department. Must have very good communications skills - verbal
and written. Must have good knowledge of standard office and library
machines.Must be skilled in typing at the net rate of 30 words per
minute.Must have good critical thinking skill - Considerable ability to
understand and follow written and oral instructions.Must have problem
solving skills - Good ability to maintain records and carry out office
procedures.Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with superiors, associates and the general
public. Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or a
Bachelor’s degree in business with emphasis in accounting, is required. A
minimum of 2 years’ experience in accounting is required. Special
Requirements - Non-profit or government experience a plus. Human
