Position Overview: The Circulation Assistant supports daily library operations by providing friendly, efficient service at the circulation desk. This position assists with checking items in and out, helping patrons access library resources, managing patron accounts, and keeping materials organized. The Circulation Assistant is a key part of our public-facing team and helps ensure a welcoming, helpful experience for everyone who visits the library.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide customer service at the circulation desk, including check-ins and check-outs of materials, issuing new library cards, answering basic inquiries, and handling patron account questions.
- Assist with maintaining accurate bibliographic and patron records in the library’s automation system.
- Shelve, organize, and maintain library materials; assist with shelf reading and collection tidiness.
- Support patrons in using the public catalog, online databases, and basic technology such as printers, copiers, and computers.
- Collect and record statistics or information as requested for library reporting and planning.
- Assist staff with reader advisory tasks or reading list support, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support library services and operations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or experience in libraries, education, customer service, or technology preferred.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Comfort learning and using technology, including library software, the internet, and office equipment.
- Strong communication and customer service skills with a positive, solutions-focused approach.
- Willingness to work with patrons of all ages in a friendly and respectful manner.
Pay Rate: $16.94/hour
Hours: 21-26/week
