Supervisor of Children's Services - Bristol Public Library

Summary: Plans, organizes and supervises library services for children, generally from birth through age twelve. Receives direction from the Library Director. Directs the daily operation of the children’s department to ensure the highest quality service. Creates and maintains an inclusive, imaginative, and educational space for children to explore and learn. Provides training, supervision and leadership to staff. Supervises all children’s services staff. Examines professional publications and other sources for book selection, periodicals and audiovisual materials. Builds collection of books, periodicals and audiovisual materials through consultation with Library Director and staff. Assembles and arranges displays of books and other materials. Plans, develops, and executes a diverse array of children’s events, programs, and educational opportunities. Participate in the development of grant applications, implementation, oversight and evaluation of grant funded programs. Makes budget recommendations for the division and administers the approved budget. Participates in job related activities of professional and community organizations. Prepares regular narrative and statistical reports. Recommends the employment, promotion or discipline of employees in department. Monitors the conditions and the security of the children’s collection, and department area. Assists in drafting children’s policy. Develops brochures, booklets, flyers, press releases and newsletters. Maintains and monitors the Children’s Department website and social media accounts. Prepares reading lists for school and community distribution. Provides outreach services to public groups to promote interest in the library.

Qualifications: Requires Master’s Degree in Library Science with 2 years of supervisory experience. Requires effective communication skills, organizational skills, and strong customer service skills.

Knowledge/Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the needs and abilities of children and the available library materials and services; and considerable ability to administer the activities of a children’s department and supervise the work of others. A general working knowledge of computer networks, software and hardware, and databases used in public library operations.

Classification & Work Hours: Full-time position, 37 ½ hours per week. Schedule: 3 days a week from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and 2 days a week from 12:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. September thru June - work alternate Fridays and Saturdays. During July and August-the library is closed on Saturdays; the work week is Monday thru Friday.

Salary: $67,499 – and up to $89,238/annually (dependent upon experience).
