Part-Time Library Assistant – Mansfield Public Library

The Town of Mansfield is hiring a part-time library assistant for the main location of the Mansfield Public Library. The Library Assistant will perform a variety of duties at the youth services reference desk and provide assistance with children’s and teen programming and outreach. The role is designed for someone who enjoys working with children and teens, promoting library programs, and assisting patrons with their informational needs. Key responsibilities include working at a busy reference desk to answer basic reference questions and assisting at the circulation desk. The assistant will promote youth programs and conduct outreach services, helping to engage the community and encourage participation in library activities. The role also involves assisting with programs for children and teens, from birth through 12th grade, and contributing to collection development and reader's advisory services. The assistant will help patrons navigate public computers, access the public catalog, the Internet, and various databases, providing general technical support and self-service resources such as photocopiers and printers. In addition to these duties, the assistant will assist with the creation of Youth Services flyers, press releases, emails, calendars, newsletters, and website content. Assisting with story times, book clubs, and summer reading programs are also part of the responsibilities. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, enthusiastic, friendly individual with strong interpersonal skills and a working knowledge of professional library methods, reference resources, and practices, along with the ability to communicate effectively and maintain confidentiality of library users' records.

Total Compensation: The salary range is $23-38-$29.58 per hour (7/1/25 rate). Part-time, non-benefits eligible employees working for the Town of Mansfield are required to participate in a social security alternative plan which is a 457 tax deferred compensation plan. This position is also eligible to accrue and use sick leave through the Connecticut Paid Sick Leave law. Outside of the tax-deferred compensation plan and paid sick leave, there are no additional employer paid benefits with this position.

Work Schedule & Location: The selected candidate will be scheduled for up to 19 hours per week. The work location is the Mansfield Public Library, 54 Warrenville Road, Mansfield Center, CT 06250. This position requires a varied work schedule including some evenings and Saturdays.

Education and Experience: High School diploma or GED required. The successful applicant should have a combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge, interests, and abilities as listed in the complete job description.
