Library Assistant – Derby Public Library

The Derby Public Library is seeking a part-time Library Assistant to perform general circulation duties to assist Patrons with public access and internet on computers as well as assisting Patrons. The part-time Library Assistant provides excellent customer service and readers' advisory assistance to Library patrons, aids with computer technology and digital content and has the duties and responsibilities set forth in the job description.

Provides excellent customer service and reader's advisory assistance to Library patrons. Provides assistance with computer technology and digital content. Performs all circulation desk duties (e.g., checks books and materials in/out, performs collection of fines and fees, library card registration). Records fines and adjustments. Responds to phone and email inquiries and performs basic reference work and/or refers requests when appropriate. May provide logistical and technical support for programs, classes or events. Provides a variety of library services (e.g., minor book repairs, interlibrary loans). Shelves materials and keeps materials in order on the shelves and maintains floor service area tasks involving the use of the local classification systems. Under the direction of the Children's Librarian and Adult Services Librarian (or their designee), may assist with the coordination of workflow and training of other staff and volunteers. Attends meetings and participates in relevant organizations, committees, etc. Performs other, related duties as required or other tasks/assignments, as necessary. Additional responsibilities and tasks for Assistants assigned to Youth Department or Technical Services.

Minimum requirements: Graduation from high school or equivalent and post-secondary courses are preferred or the equivalent in practical experience. Excellent customer services skills and experience are required. Must have familiarity with the City of Derby, its history and genealogy or a strong interest in learning about the local history and genealogy. Library work experience is preferred.
