The Teen Librarian at the Avon Free Public Library plays a key role in creating a welcoming and engaging environment for teens ages 12-18, with a strong commitment to inclusivity. The ideal candidate will manage a lively 2,000-square-foot Teen Room during school-day afternoons, balancing the energy and needs of a busy, social space. This position requires strong communication skills to engage with teens and develop programming that reflects their diverse needs, ensuring that all young people feel safe, valued, and supported.
Responsibilities include overseeing and supporting teen volunteers, running a Teen Advisory Board, and facilitating programs that foster creativity and connection among teens. Success in this role requires adaptability, enthusiasm, and a deep commitment to teen engagement. The Teen Librarian must be an active presence in the Teen Room, fostering relationships with teens, including those from LGBTQIA+ communities, and ensuring they feel heard and represented. Strong teamwork and communication skills are essential, as this position works closely with colleagues to develop innovative programs and contribute to a vibrant library experience for the entire community. The ideal candidate will collaborate with local schools for outreach and book talks but will also work closely with the library team to plan and execute large-scale community events, such as an Avon Pride Block Party and Juneteenth celebrations. In the absence of the Children's and Teen Services Manager, the Teen Librarian is in charge and ensures seamless service and operations.
Collection development remains an aspect of this role, with the ideal candidate selecting and maintaining a diverse and inclusive teen collection that reflects a wide range of perspectives and experiences, with a particular focus on ensuring LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC representation. Carefully curating a teen collection of materials, including books, graphic novels, and manga, the Teen Librarian will provide access to stories that resonate with all teens. Additionally, strong readers’ advisory skills are essential, as the Teen Librarian will provide personalized reading recommendations to engage and inspire avid readers.
