Archives Intern - Library Association of Warehouse Point, East Windsor

Responsible to: Library Director

About the Library: The Library Association of Warehouse Point is a small town public library located in East Windsor, CT, founded on a bequest from a judge in the 1850s. We have quite a bit of documentation related to his life, the early days of the library, and East Windsor CT history. Most of it has found a home, but many documents need to be digitized, catalogued, and put in their place. We also have a collection of maps that need to be digitized.

Purpose of the Position: The Archives Intern will research best practices in preservation of 1850s through 2000s archival documents, which include books, papers, photos, and large format maps/posters; and digitization of such documents. The goal of the internship is to get our archives organized better and to allow the intern to learn more about how to run an archive at a small town library.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Digitize images at archival standards. Identify locations within the archive for newly acquired items and prepare them for storage. Describe and catalog archival items into Microsoft Excel and/or Sierra ILS. Find materials to share on social media platforms to increase archives’ online presence. Assist with various archival projects such as indexing, appraisal, and welcoming visitors to the archive.

REQUIREMENTS: Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent attention to detail and ability to apply details consistently. Solid research ability. Experience with Microsoft applications. Willingness to learn new programs, take initiative, and work independently. Ability to lift medium-heavy boxes and walk up and down stairs.

ELIGIBILITY: This can be a part or full-time internship based on the needs/working constraints of the intern. This Internship is unpaid but we are willing to help with paperwork for school and provide references afterwards. We encourage all promising library/archival students to apply to this position and be offered the chance to work in a flexible and welcoming environment.

How to Apply: Please forward a cover letter and resume to: Erin Horanzy, Library Director, Ehoranzy.lawp@libraryconnection.info.
