This wonderfully busy department serves children from birth through Grade 6 and their caregivers as well as those who work with children. The staff manage a large collection, provide a robust lineup of programming, and interact with a very engaged community. The ideal candidate is someone who truly loves working with children and interacting with caregivers and educators, and can bring enthusiasm, warmth, and creativity to the position. We are looking for someone with a strong knowledge of children’s literature and a general understanding of childhood development who enjoys both independent and collaborative work.
Working under the general direction of the Director of Children’s Services, the Children’s Services Assistant will have the opportunity to work in all areas of children’s services. Responsibilities include: Creating and executing children’s library programs. Creating program descriptions, online calendar postings, flyers and other necessary marketing materials. Providing outreach services to local schools and childcare centers as assigned. Assisting with the development and maintenance of the collection. Providing readers’ advisory, reference, and technology services to children, caregivers, and educators. Working with the team to create displays, themed décor, and passive programming/interactive activities.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: B.A., B.S., or equivalent combination of education and experience. One or more years’ worth of customer service experience in a library or similar setting. Experience in children’s services in a public library or school library media center preferred. Solid working knowledge of MS Office software, internet searching, and the ability to learn new hardware and software as required. Strong oral and written communication skills. Must have a current driver’s license and pass a required background check.
Hours: 28 hours/week. Schedule will include three days a week 9-5, one day a week 12-8, and a Saturday rotation on every third Saturday (in lieu of hours during the week.)
Hourly Rate: starting at $21.50/hour; this is a non-benefited position.
