The James Blackstone Memorial Library is seeking an enthusiastic Associate Librarian to head up our Youth Services team. The ideal candidate is creative and flexible, knowledgeable about trends in children’s library services and programs, customer-service oriented, and a collaborative team player. This individual will work with the Teen Librarian and Children’s Services Staff to plan and implement programs and services for babies, children, and teens, and develop and maintain the children’s and Library of Things collections. The Associate Librarian must have strong technology skills, plus excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Grant writing experience is a plus. Experience with children is a must.

The successful candidate will help lead and inspire the Youth Services team to help carry out this mission by implementing the library’s recently completed Strategic Framework.
The Blackstone Library is located in Branford, CT, a shoreline town of 28,000 residents. The library recently completed a $5.2 million renovation, creating a new Computer Lab, Conference Room, Café area, and a new Youth Services area. The library is an architectural gem and recently celebrated its 125th anniversary with a wonderful day-long party attended by hundreds of Branford residents.
Education and skills: A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program is required. Three years of increasingly responsible professional library work, preferably with supervisory experience and experience in youth services. Ability to apply principles of library science to solve practical problems. Ability to supervise. Ability to relate effectively and courteously to library patrons and co-workers and be an effective team player. Knowledge of supervisory methods, including work delegation, scheduling, evaluating performance and maintaining morale. Ability to prepare clear and concise statistical and narrative reports. Comfortable working with and learning new technology, including 3D printers. Some experience with cataloging preferred. Experience with computerized library systems, other computer programs, and electronic resources. Physical strength and dexterity are required to handle library items and boxes up to 40 pounds in weight, and to transport loaded book carts. This position reports directly to the Library Director. Hours: 40 hours per week, full-time, non-exempt position with a generous benefits package, including medical, dental, and paid time off. Includes daytime, evening, and weekend shifts. Compensation range: $65,000-75,000, depending on experience.
