Assistant Director of Youth and Family Services - Hartford Public Library, CT

     Reporting to the Director of Public Services, the Assistant Director of Youth and Family Services oversees all aspects of service delivery for youth from birth through age 19 and their families. Responsibilities include:
     Service Delivery: System wide support of the Library’s strategic initiatives for effective execution of programs and services in literacy, STEM, life skills, and the arts. Takes the lead in establishing ideas and supports for a variety of programs for youth and families as well as family engagement programs. Assists with preparation, implementation and evaluation of grants. Partners with the youth and family services department to maintain partnerships and collaborations with public schools, community agencies, organizations and institutions that work to create successful youth and families. Provides outreach to youth-serving city agencies, schools and organizations. Participates in community activities and maintains contact with local officials, organizations, and library customers in order to fulfill the library’s strategic plan.
     Employee Supervision and Leadership: Supervise full and part time staff. Provide leadership, support and professional development for youth services staff across the system. Oversight of scheduling to support staffing levels for youth services system wide. Work with the Branch Managers to ensure effective youth services delivery at all locations. Manager in charge responsibilities/back up when needed.
     Outreach: Participates in community meetings and activities and collaborates with public private schools and other educational institutions and city agencies. Promotes and solidifies the Library’s role in the community, collaboration understood as key to positive results. Takes a lead role in execution of the Boundless Partnership with Hartford Public Schools.
     Collections/Reports/Fiscal Responsibility: Orders and promotes children’s materials (print and media) for library system and provides readers advisory. Oversight of collections to include development and evaluation for young children, teens and parents print, non-print and online content. Analyzes statistics and prepares system wide quarterly and statistical reports monthly and annually to Direct of Public Services. Manages youth collections and programming budgets.
     Required: Master’s in Library Science or Master’s in Library Information Science from ALA accredited institution required. At least 5 years’ experience working in a library setting with youth and teens. At least 3 years’ supervisory experience. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, staff, community partners and city agencies. Demonstrates experience in children’s literature, early and childhood literacy and various types of informational materials. Demonstrates experience in collection development principles practices. Experience managing projects including budget and grants management. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must have strong organizational and priority setting skill. Strong commitment to consistent excellent customer service to a diverse population. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
     Preferred: Second language preferred. Solid working knowledge of current and emerging technologies, youth program assessment tools, Google Docs and Asana.
