Position Focus:
The Yale University Library seeks a dynamic and collaborative manager
to lead the Monographic FastCat Unit and to join our team of innovative
technical services professionals. The Monographic FastCat Unit Manager
develops and maintains an evolving array of integrated automated and
manual workflows devoted to the timely accession and description of
monographic resources for Yale University Library. This position, which
leads a seven-person unit, is an exceptional opportunity for a librarian
motivated by the purposeful application of staff skills, technology,
and best practices to serve the resource needs of research library
users. The role also offers the opportunity to collaborate with
colleagues in initiatives, such as those involving linked data, research
data description and access, and collaborative collection development,
where Yale Library is working with its peers to develop sustainable
models for library services.
The position works closely with
other units in Technical Services and its partner departments to support
and improve access to monographic resources: optimizes processes
including receiving, cataloging, invoice voucher creation, and FileNet
invoice scanning; recommends and implements improvements to existing
tools and workflows; provides technical services expertise internally to
library staff and externally to the Yale community and colleagues in
the profession; keeps abreast of trends in technical services practice,
including acquisitions and cataloging, as well as trends in publishing,
technology, and other areas that relate to monographic processing.
Essential Duties:
1. Hires, trains, evaluates, and sets annual goals for clerical &
technical staff. 2. Provides assistance and expertise for print
monographic accession operations throughout the library. In
collaboration with stakeholders and the Director of Monographic
Processing Services, develops best practices, policies, and procedures
for managing and ensuring accountability for accessioning of print
monographic materials. 3. Manages process and workflow changes based on
organizational and departmental needs. 4. Makes recommendations for
staffing and level of expertise needed for receiving units. 5. Oversees
processing for disposition of unwanted gift material. Serves as one of
the Library’s points of contact with vendors who accept library
materials for redistribution. 6. May be required to assist in disaster
recovery efforts. 7. Fiscal year-end vacation restrictions apply.
Required Education and Experience: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science. This position will be assigned a
rank of Librarian 2 or 3 based on a combination of professional

Required Skills/Abilities:
(1) Two years of professional experience and accomplishments and
demonstrated supervisory experience, including training and staff
development. (2) Demonstrated ability managing library technical
services operations. Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging and
acquisitions. Ability with use of integrated library systems (preferably
Voyager). (3) Ability to plan, initiate, and implement effective
programs, projects, and services. Excellent organizational skills,
demonstrated ability to solve problems and manage complex workflows, a
high level of numeracy, and ability to deal effectively with complex
budgets. (4) Excellent oral and written communication skills, including
large-group presentations. Excellent interpersonal and team
collaboration skills. Ability and adaptability needed to work
effectively in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment. (5)
References indicating reliability and consistent professional activity
in the acquisitions or cataloging areas of library science. Ability to
work with faculty, staff, and students in a culturally diverse
environment.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge of one or more Western European languages.
Demonstrated record of leading interdepartmental projects and bringing
them to a successful conclusion in a timely fashion.
