Library Director - The
Great Neck Library seeks an energetic, experienced leader to bring
vision and a patron-centric approach to this historic library system.
This diverse community is a suburb of New York City; a 34-minute train
ride to midtown Manhattan.
The Great Neck Library is an
association library, governed by a seven-person elected Board,
consisting of the main library and three branches., serving over 45,000
residents with a 2021-22 operating budget of $9.65 million and a current
staff of 46 full time and 43 part time employees The main building was
renovated in 2016, 2 branch renovations are in progress and a landscape
project including an interactive children’s garden is to commence this
summer.
Responsibilities: The Library Director is
responsible for daily operations, assessing the scope and direction of
material collections, maintaining state of the art facilities and
continuing to develop the library’s role as an online portal to the
world of information. The Director is further charged with shaping a
strategic vision, developing a successful, team-oriented staff in a
unionized environment, to be fiscally prudent and resourceful and to
advocate for the library while building productive relationships with
local organizations and the community in its efforts to keep the library
evolving and progressive.
Qualifications: At least
eight years administrative/supervisory experience, five of which as a
Library Director, Assistant Director or equivalent, as well as
experience working with a Board of Trustees and a diverse range of
stakeholders. Must be highly knowledgeable about current library and
management practices, as well as emerging trends that will impact the
library’s future. Must be available for evening and weekend meetings and
external events.
Compensation: The Library offers a
competitive salary commensurate with the experience. Compensation
includes dental, health, retirement, 403B, 457 plans and additional
benefits.
Special Requirement: Master of Library Science
required. Eligibility for a New York State public librarian’s
professional certificate at the time of application; possession of
certificate at the time of appointment.
