Youth Services Assistant - Derby Neck Library. Job Summary: The Youth Services Assistant is responsible for
assisting the Youth Services Librarian with the daily operations of the
Youth Services Department. This person assists the Youth Services
Librarian in developing and implementing programs and events for
children, teens and families.
Supervision Received: Reports to
the Head Librarian and the Youth Services Librarian. Works under the
immediate supervision of the Youth Services Librarian.
Essential
Job Functions: Assists in the development and implementation of
children’s, teens and family programs and special events. Assists in
processing all children’s and teen print materials. Ensures open spaces
in the Youth Services Department are tidy at all times. Straightens
shelves in Youth Services Department, rotating books on display. Assists
in the development and implementation of the summer reading program.
Build and maintain a strong working knowledge of the circulation system.
Build and maintain a strong working knowledge of current and emerging
technologies. Work Circulation Desk as scheduled. Respond to patron
requests. Answer phones and take messages as necessary. Process
inter-library loan requests from other libraries. Perform other duties
as assigned by the Youth Services Librarian and the Head Librarian.
Displays professional conduct and appearance at all times while
performing duties.
Qualifications and Requirements: High School
Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree, in a related field
preferred. A passion for working with youth of all ages. Ability to
interact and assist with the public in a friendly and responsive manner.
A strong background with children’s print and non-print media. A
familiarity with current and emerging technologies. Patience, tact, and
excellent communication skills. Has a cooperative team spirit.
Preferred: Experience creating and conducting a variety of lively
programs for children, youth and teens and/or serving youth and
fostering community engagement with children, youth and teens. Knowledge
of library best practices and/or experience working in public
libraries. Bilingual language skills desirable.
Abilities:
Ability to continuously bend, twist, stoop, reach and pull. Ability to
keep composure in everyday, potentially stressful situations. Ability to
meet a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends. Lifting
of moderate to heavy weight material up to 30 lbs.
Initial
compensation and benefits: $18-20.30 per hour, DOE; 20-24 hours weekly
including evenings and weekends as scheduled; Simple IRA retirement plan
with up to 3% employer match; tuition reimbursement.
