Senior Librarian, Cataloging - New York Public Library. Job ID: 2019-10815. Full-Time. The Cataloging department provides discoverability of all materials in all formats to users of the BookOps member libraries who search the public online catalog. Materials are discoverable if they are cataloged correctly and accurately for author, title, subject and series access, in formats utilized by the ILS, thereby making more materials available to more library users in both NYPL and BPL circulating collections as well as Research collections.
     The Senior Librarian position is responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of materials in all formats including serials for both the adult and juvenile collections of the BookOps member libraries of NYPL and BPL. A significant focus of the position entails cataloging of World Language materials in East Asian and Pan-Pacific languages particularly Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Western European languages, preferably Spanish, French, and Italian.
     Principal Responsibilities: Reporting to the Supervising Librarian, the Senior Librarian: Performs original and complex copy cataloging of print and non-print formats for adult and juvenile collections and World Language resources, including Chinese, Japanese and other East Asian and Pan-Pacific languages or Western European languages, preferably Spanish, French, and Italian. Provides classification for print and non-print resources in English and World Language collections. Edits and upgrades existing brief MARC records to full-level cataloging standards. Performs cataloging of serial publications as needed. Adheres to RDA standards and other national cataloging rules, such as AACR2 and ISBD guidelines. Searches and applies name, subject, and uniform title authority headings in bibliographic records. Records cataloging statistics as required. Plans and executes special cataloging assignments, and contributes to the development of procedures, manuals, and reports.
     Required Education & Experience: ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLS, MLIS) and relevant professional cataloging work experience required to successfully perform the principal responsibilities.
     Minimum Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of RDA, AACR2, Library of Congress Subject and Name headings, Dewey Decimal Classification, MARC formats and principles of authority control. Reading knowledge of one or more non-English languages, especially Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and pan-Pacific languages including Tagalog. Experience with an online ILS system (preferably Innovative’s Sierra) and an online bibliographic utility such as OCLC Connexion. Working knowledge of serials cataloging and CONSER principles. Experience with a MARC conversion and text editing tool such as MarcEdit. Familiarity with emerging trends and issues in cataloging. Demonstrated knowledge of an online ILS cataloging module such as Sierra. Proficient experience using Microsoft Office software. Flexibility in adapting to changeable cataloging needs. Ability to work under pressure, problem solve, and prioritize cataloging tasks. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in working tactfully with other library staff in a team setting. Critical judgment skills in cataloging responsibilities.
     Preferred Qualifications: Experience with the Sierra ILS cataloging module. Understanding of authority records; experience with PCC and NACO preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin) language. Demonstrated knowledge of the Pinyin system of romanization. Knowledge and awareness of trends in Chinese publishing. Knowledge and awareness of emerging trends in cataloging and metadata. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively to meet goals and deadlines.

     Work Environment: Office environment; open space with assigned computer workstations; materials are physically handled and transferred from shelves to book carts.
     Physical Duties: Ability to move book trucks and handle materials that may weigh up to 30 lbs. May require travel within NYC.
     Starting Salary: USD $53,424.00/Yr.
     Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday - Friday
     Union / Non Union: Local 1930
