Part-time Library Assistant - Norwalk Public Library

Part-time Library Assistant - Norwalk Public Library System. (This position requires that the candidate be willing and able to work in any library department and/or building within the Norwalk Public Library System and at hours established by the library.) Qualifications: High school diploma and minimum of 2-year college Associate Degree, or Library Technical Assistant degree. In lieu of the above, two years of library work experience at a clerical level, with solid recommendation. Ability to operate computers required. Ability to perform all Library Clerk tasks. Spanish or other language ability a plus. Duties: Under librarian, department head or head cataloger's supervision: May allocate work to clerks and shelvers. May assist library customers in directional and basic information requests, use of OPACs, PC workstations, CD-ROMs and Internet. May perform basic maintenance of equipment such as film machines and reader/printers, computers and typewriters. May assist librarians with weeding and other aspects of collection development and maintenance. May process and/or order materials, file, produce labels, perform bibliographic data entry, process newspapers or magazines, repair and cover books and other library materials. Must enjoy working with children, parents, public in general. May assist in preparing for, producing, and providing story hours, flyers, programs, mailing lists and other support materials. May do copy cataloging; check bibliographic data entry and filing of Library Clerks and Pages. Perform basic automated system responsibilities such as startup, shutdown and backup; may process and/or order materials, file, produce labels, perform data entry, process newspapers, prepare and maintain acquisition orders and records, maintain periodical and continuations records. May conduct interlibrary loan transactions, including: direct interaction with customers, in person, by phone, and in writing. Searches requests, identifies and forwards requests to owning libraries via fax, phone, mail, Connecticar or OCLC. Corresponds with regional office, fills ILL requests from other libraries. May verify requests. Uses OPAC, ReQuest system, OCLC and other computer systems, databases and programs. Maintains records. May on occasion be asked to assume appropriate supervisory responsibilities, with clerks and/or volunteers. Hours: Up to 19.5 hours per week with some flexibility Beginning pay rate: $12.00/hr.
