Head of Children's Services - Public Library of New London

Head of Children's Services - The Public Library of New London is seeking a creative and energetic Head of Children’s Services who has a passion for working with children and families. Responsible for providing quality library services to children, their caregivers and other adults working with children. Manage one full-time and several part-time staff. Plan, implement and supervise programs. Select materials to develop a collection that offers relevant resources. Develop and maintain layout and appearance of the children’s space, ensuring a safe and inviting area. Promote library services by outreach and partnerships with schools, daycare centers and community groups that target children. Marketing children’s services and programs, maintaining the children’s section of the web site, keeping social media up to date and producing an electronic newsletter are also important components of this position.
     MLS/MLIS from an accredited institution and experience working with children required. Professional library experience preferred. The ideal candidate has experience working with young children and their caregivers using early and pre-literacy concepts, such as the skills and practices in Every Child Ready to Read. Second language skills (English/Spanish) are a plus.

     New London is located on Long Island Sound with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. There are many recreational amenities in the city, including Ocean Beach Park, a 50-acre park with a white sand beach and a half-mile board walk. New London is home to three colleges, an active arts scene and is the birth place of Eugene O’Neill. The main Amtrak line between Boston and New York stops three blocks from the library.
     This is a full-time position with a benefit package. The starting salary is $50,000 for a 35 hour week, including one evening a week and one Saturday a month. A car and valid driver’s license also necessary.
