Library Assistant - The Norfolk Library

Library Assistant - The Norfolk Library is seeking an energetic, detail-oriented, self-motivated person to join our small library team. Founded in 1888, the historic Norfolk Library is a vibrant community center that offers family and children’s programs, concerts, and lectures, as well as traditional library services. We are looking for someone who enjoys interacting with people and sharing their passion for libraries and community engagement. Excellent customer service, written and interpersonal skills, proficiency with computers, the ability to multi-task, an enthusiasm for learning and a sense of humor are essential. Responsibilities of this position include: circulation services and use of the library’s computerized circulation system to manage library materials and assist patrons; answer patrons’ questions using traditional and digital resources; assist patrons with computers, electronic devices, and library resources; occasional clerical work such as processing books and other library materials and circulation statistics; when required, opening or closing the library; setting up for programs and assisting with publicity as necessary. Starting hours (16-20): three weekday mornings and Sunday afternoons. Additional hours may be available on an as-needed basis. Qualifications: two years of college; ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with staff and patrons; ability to follow oral instructions; ability to lift and move furniture/equipment in excess of 25 lbs.
